I have been telling my wife I would quit for quite some time and finally did have the patch stuck to my arm. I have this Flem I like choke on, food tastes different, I'm slightly irritable ok maybe allot.

Q: Will all of this go away? How long did it take anyone experience this kind of stuff?

I have heard a number of times that once you make 21 days you have a new habit - this one is NOT smoking.

I just quit (AGAIN - stopped for a year once) and I am on my 2nd week with no patch. But then I only smoked about 6-7/day. If the irritable is due to aching jaws due to clinching my teeth, I take an aspirin or 2 to help the aching for a week or so.

The flem is probably a good sign IMO. I would think that signifies that you are getting rid of the constant congestion caused by smoking. Another thing I have tried when I have drainage is a very mild decongestant, the ones that suggest you take a couple every 4-6 hours. But I only take one as infrequently as I can.

GOOD LUCK! HANG IN THERE!

I did the patch for almost 90 days. Good thing too, or I might have killed someone.

I also got into hershey bars to help satisfy the oral craving. I had to dial that back, but it helped, too.

After four months, food tasted MUCH better, and people told me I smelled better, not like an ashtray like before.

You can do this. It's worth it, especially at THESE prices today!!!

Oh, one more thing.

I quit in 1992.

Anyone quit smoking recently

Careful what methods you use to quit. Dr. told my buddy he'd die if he didn't quit.
So he started chewing toothpicks and died of the Dutch Elm disease.

Crap in my mouth and throat first thing in the morning (coughing up brown gunk) was the reason I quit. And cigs had gone to $.35 a pack, ok you got me, I didn't quit recently, how about 45 years ago. Be prepared to put on some weight if you aren't careful. I went from about 165 to 216. Got serious and came down to 170 and stayed there for years. Got to get serious again.
Wishing you the best

I quit Jan 2, 2009. I was determined and it was easier that way, my mind was made up. You only have a little bit of hell to go thru, personally, I quit drinkin for a couple of months to break the assiciation.... and now can drink with no SMOKES! :patriot:

When you go to the doctor sick and fat, the first thing he'll tell you is "Let's handle the sick part first."

It is a proven fact that your body picks and chooses what order it wants to repair things.

Whatever it takes to quit, 5 lbs of hard candy a day, throwing rubber bricks at the TV, DO IT!!! Nothing is out of bounds... peeing on all the neighbourhood hydrants, if it helps! (hey, you gotta explain it to the neighbours, not me!)

It will all subside in a while. The only thing that has more power than our capacity to repeat, is our interest in rest.

I quit Thanksgiving Sunday, 2000. And that's Canadian Thanksgiving. A month before yours.

I no longer have to convince myself that I will never smoke again.

If you have kids, they will be so very proud of you. You are doing them a life-favour. If your wife smokes... well... good luck with that.

I'm about to take a second try with chantix. It was working the first time, but the side effects were a problem. Yes I know, the side effects of smoking are far worse!

Fight through it Chris!

From what I have heard, Chantix IS effective for some folks. However, I don't think I would recommend it. The nicotine patch will step down the amount of nicotine, and that is the chemical that your body is already used to.

The patch is effective because of that nicotine step-down, and the fact that you are breaking the habit of the delivery system that is deeply ingrained, which is the act of smoking.

So, there are no greater risks associated with the patch, and I can tell you from personal experience that it WORKS.

Good luck. I begin my journey to never picking up another cigarette myself today. I've been promising my wife for seven years now, and I have finally made my mind up. I'm going to be trying it cold turkey. I really don't want to rely on patches or gum.
