"X" terminal on Paragon clock

If a neutral is supplied to the X terminal of a paragon defrost clock it will terminate the defrost? After which the neutral is removed and the system is ready for the next defrost. If the system is faulty and a neutral is continuiosly supplied to X the clock still turns but will the system go onto the next defrost or will this neutral negate the defrost happening??

Depends on the clock. Some use the "X" terminal to feed power to the timer motor. Some use "X" as a termination. Some clocks are 230V and therefore have no neutral wire.

On a defrost timer that has termination (in addition to failsafe) - the system will not defrost as long as there is power to the solenoid release plunger on the timer. In other words if the contact points in the termination stat fail to open, the system will never defrost.

Paragon inserts a red warning sheet with their timeclocks with a termination solenoid warning that the solenoid coil is not rated for continuous duty. So it is true that if it's terminator is constantly energized, the system won't go into defrost.....at least not until after the coil burns out.

Thanks Guys. Thats the answer I was hoping for!
Its the Paragon 8145-21 which uses the X terminal for defrost termination and it is a 220v & Neutral clock.
I seem to have an erratic fault where after a few days of running perfectly the coil ices up. And Im just trying to go through all the possibilities. The fans are still running after defrost so I dont think it is the fan delay defrost termination stat. I think that the clock is getting stuck and not going onto defrost after a period. Ill check it again today.

Just something to think about.

Funny thing - I stopped at the store to change out the faulty klixon today (I didn't condemn it - just puttin' the parts on) and tested out the control after I had the whole &*#@$*! put back together and pulled down to within 10F of temp.

Defrost terminated IMMEDIATELY!!! After tracing out the wiring, I found the "X" wire (which happens to be neutral) shorted to ground somewhere inside the frame of the cabinet. Until I get a final decision from the office, she's runnin' on straight time!

Hmmmm. I thought I was the only fool with strange problems.:) Most of the coils we fitted in South Africa (which were locally manufactured) relied only on the saftey klixon .We very rarely used the X terminal at all. The Paragon would time out and if it didnt we would rely on the klixon. Thanks for the link below.
