Suppose they hadn't?

How many people would have been affected? If a company the size of GM folded, the effect would have trickled down as close as people on here. It wouldn't be just GM employees out of work. It would have been suppliers to GM, which may not be highly paid union workers. It would be many people in the towns they live/work in. Stores, restaurants, etc. With considerable unemployment in these towns, HVAC contractors would feel the effect. Would some of them close? Then there's the tax implications. All these people no longer working. They are no longer paying taxes. What does that do to the deficit? What does that do to the economy in general?

Yes, many were hurt. Many more would have been had GM not been saved.
probably, but maybe not
I do not know which way to lean, but I do agree with this statement. Many would have been impacted by GM shutting down, but would it?

If a company like this was to go the true way of capitalism would it not be more likely to survive or be reincarnated in a better way?

I am not a union member, do not want to bash unions or get into that discussion, but the wages for past, present and future workers is what killed the company. If you simply said, to a non-union staff, take a pay cut or be unemployed that would be it. But not with unions. Again pros and cons there.

I feel the same with the bank situation, bailouts were wrong.

The merging of AT&T and T-Mobile is wrong. I heard, and I do not remember where or who, it said that this merger would INCREASE competition and LOWER the cost of cell service. How in the he!! can you logically think that?
example(s):gas stations/companies

Maybe I am too indoctrinated, but freedom to choose brings down the price by allowing you to shop multiple companies. If multiple companies do not exist, then the ability to open a competing business is there, thus creating jobs and competition.
examples: Wendy's, McDonald's, Carl's Jr, Burger King, Target, K-Mart, Wal Mart, Costco, Sam's Club

ramble, ramble, but I think I got the point across.
