The fine folks that run this site have allowed me to post this notice.

My name is Joe Gurney and I am a certified Level 4 vibration analyst and Level 3 vibration analysis Instructor working out of the Nashville, TN Trane office. I will be teaching Vibration Analysis classes for Trane techs this spring and my hope is that this post will help to make more techs aware that this training is available. The Level 1 Beginners course will be held in March and the Level 2 Intermediate course in April. Certification exams are offered at the end of each class. The classes and certifications comply with ISO and ASNT standards. These classes are only available to Trane direct employees. If you are interested please contact me for details. My email address is in my profile. If you have others in your office that would be interested please pass this info along.

Thanks again to HVAC-Talk for letting post this information.

this class kicks a$$!!!

i jumped into Joe's class right into Level 2 and passed the first time. i had been performing vibration analysis (that's what i called it) for about 1 or 2 years. now i realise that what i was really doing was 'pretending' to do vibration analysis (VA).

i am very confident in VA now and i am willing to tackle any job with confidence (even if i shouldn't). some problems still take me longer to figure out, but i always figure them out...and Joe is there to help! i figured that as soon as the class was finished, i probably wouldn't hear from him again (unless i needed him)...wrong! i still get e-mails about classes and he passes along great info as it becomes available and e-mails are returned quickly. if you investigate VA on the internet, you will get tons of information on ships and paper mills and a whole bunch of other stuff that you and i will never work on. this class uses examples from chillers and air handlers and other things that we DO work with everyday.

i plan to take the Level 3 class next year (stick around 'til then Joe!)...this years budget is mostly for new equipment since we now know how to use what we have and now we know why we don't have enough.

this VA thing has proven itself to be quite profitable. it is one of those things that you learn about that opens up a whole new world. i never knew how much equipment was running like crap until i could measure it like this and make it right.

TAKE THIS CLASS!

Hi Teckster,

My intent for this post was to get to Trane techs that might not hear about my Trane classes. I try to notify as many offices as I can but sometimes it seems that the info doesn't filter down to the techs. Since the site administrators were nice enough to allow me to post, I didn't want to take advantage by turning it into some kind of advertising.

I do teach public classes from time to time. If you want to email me I can send you details.

Hey Joe, curious you being out Nashville, TN...did you used to be with Mobius Ilearn? I know a year or 2 ago they had worked w/ the DFW Trane office. Good to see people getting the training.

Hi Tx,

I think the DFW class happened in 2007, just before I started teaching my classes but it was done by a good friend of mine from Mobius. I know all of the people at Mobius very well and, in fact, I use their materials in my classes but I've been with Trane for the last 8 years. I saw the need for this training right after I came to Trane but it took me a while to put it together. I did classes in 08 and 09. I had one tech from Dallas and one from Ft Worth in my Level 2 class with Jayguy. Since Trane is so big and spread out, I've been struggling to get the word to the techs that are doing vibe work. I'm really hoping that this string will help.

Hi Who,

The data collector I use can be seen at http://www2.emersonprocess.com/en-U...US/brands/csitechnologies/pva/csi2130/Pages/CSI2130MachineryHealthAnalyzer.aspx
and the software at http://www2.emersonprocess.com/en-US/brands/amssuite/amsmachinerymanager/Pages/MachineryManager.aspx. If this isn't what you're looking for let me know and I'll get you other information.

Also - I was emailed a question and I want to clear it up. Techs from Trane franchise offices are welcome to attend the classes.

Most large industrial sites and a lot of smaller ones are doing vibration analysis, either in-house or through a contractor. Like you said, being able to predict failures and to make small repairs before they become big problems is invaluable. You would be amazed at the things you can see with this technology. If you know the vibration guys at Caterpillar ask them to show you what they are doing. It's pretty cool.

There are quite a few companies that make vibration analysis equipment. I like CSI's stuff. You can get cheaper but I don't think you can buy better.

Joe has been mentoring me for several years now, he knows his stuff.

I have taken TA's(Technical Associates) and Mobius class's. They are good but , I think having a class that focuses on HVAC equip would be very beneficial and make it easier to learn VA.

I am going to press management to send me to your Level 2 class. Don't think I am ready for level 3 yet, but wouldn't hurt to take level 2 over again.
Especially if it relates to our equipment. To bad your on the other side of the Country!

Ever thought of moving to the West Coast? LOL

Jayguy: you going to the Warranty Conference in Phoenix in March?

I've owned a few machines in the past, older IRD's, Schenck Vibroport 30, CSI (Emerson)2120 and now I have the Commtest VB7. Commtest is an excellent company. Their machines have great support, free software upgrades, good training and their products are half the price of that other Knoxville company. Many OEM's charge a small fortune for yearly maintenance of their equipment. Check Commtest out if your interested in getting vibration equipment.
Be prepared to spend a lot of time training, the operator makes the machine. Vibration analysis is a very complicated field. Anyone can can take a signature, very few can interpret the results correctly. Good Luck

Tunaguy is right on both counts. Commtest makes some good equipment, quite a few of the Trane offices use it. And it takes a lot of work to get good at vibe analysis. If you go at it half-hearted you will fail. Training is the key to success.

Tuna - do you still have your 2120 and software? If yes, would you want to part with them?

Drivewizard - You know I can't wait to head west, but only as far as Vegas.

we never get to go someplace WARM! our WC's are in Chic-A-Go (i love you kelly bundy)! I have not been invited to go to this years conference...probably some of the newbies are going to go first.

Hey Joe, Its Chris from Pacific Coast Trane, great to see you on the site!!!! Hey All HVAC guys...Joe is a great guy!! Its not often that you can pick the brain of a CAT IV vibe guy. There is only about 100 world-wide!! Ok I also see some other TRANE guys here, I'll be at the warrranty conference, hope to run into some of you.

Joe Vibe:
My 2120 was stolen by an ex-employee, secretary and her boyfriend no less. If I have any older software then I can send them to you for free, however I don't know if they would be of any use. Mastertrend and RBM I believe. I have CSI balancing and laser alignment software too.
I believe I have the CSI balancing set complete, almost brand new, still in it's briefcase! I still have the Schenck Trebel too, although it's very old (1988). The Schenck 4 plane balancing program was ahead of its time. I have the CSI laser battery recharge set only but nothing else from the laser alignment tool.
I bought the VB7 and the Easy Laser, I've been very happy with that decision.

TunaGuy - I sent you an email about your CSI stuff.
I demo'ed an older version Commtest box but I've not played with the VB7. It was a single channel box, maybe a 3000 or VB5, I can't remember. At the time, it didn't have the capabilities I needed. I really liked a lot of the features in the Ascent software though.

Hi Chris - Good to hear from you. I hope everythings going well. Tell Eric I said Hi.

Jayguy - Never anyplace warm? You got to come to my class at the best time of year. How can you beat LaCrosse in February? I think it got all the way up to 5 or 6 that week. Maybe I can schedule my Cat 3 class somewhere warm.....Vegas comes to mind.
