You're right, I was thinking of a heat pump only thermostat. I was under that impression when martyinlincoln said to use emergency heat in the above post.
If the tstat can be configured to conventional, they're wouldn't be an emergency heat to even worry about.

I would jumper "Y" to "O" instead of "R" to "O". Jumping Y to O will allow the reversing valve to shift between cycles helping to insure proper lubrication of the valve. But I guess if you NEVER plan on doing dual fuel if it does seize in the cool mode, no harm, no foul.

LOL!

Some ppl jumping in here and giving advice without reading the whole thread.

I think if the old guy likes his gas heat he should run his stat in Emergency Heat, and DON'T change any low voltage wiring!!!!! Just makes a headache for the next owner.

It would be ok but i like to jumper o to r that way the reversing valve is always ready to go
I would go with the Y to O jumper. Keeps the RV "exercised" in case it's ever put back in HP use, and it automatically equalizes the system each time it shuts off, making it easier for the compressor to start if short-cycled.

And by the way, finding creative solutions to a customer's issue does not make you a HACK. It makes you intelligent and competent enough to give them what they want.

Some of the greatest geniuses of our trade over the decades, would be called "hacks" by some of the guys here. :gah:

Only showing a different options personal call people hate noise always a neighbor with a window open. Question? Most digital thermostats energize the reversing valve as soon as they are put into cooling so i dont see the equlizing point. I know mercury stats cycled. The valve, but the great brains of Oregon outlawed them a few years ago.

Having a solenoid coil humming 24x7 can be annoying also. If my old memory serves me it wasn't until the Chronotherm IV that they started letting go of the "O" circuit between cycles. Prior to that when the stat was indexed for cooling the "O" terminal was fed hot keeping it energized until the selector was set to either "Off" or "Heat". They were finding that keeping the valve held for long periods reduced the lubrication of the valve leading to more stuck valves. So having it shift during the cool mode when pressures are higher (more positive shift) and the run length is also longer helped extend valve life.

Still, dual fuel with a 40-45F (no defrost cycle) changeover, the heat pump will kick rear and be a lot more cost effective than fossil fuel at those temps.
