Other than the obvious cracked igniter, how can you test an HSI? I came across one that is getting 24V out of the gas valve to it but does not heat up at all.

I replaced the igniter because there is no glowing of the HSI. I fired it and it lit off as normal, once. After that it started the same thing.

When you say energize are you referring to the click just prior to the the HSI glowing? It does not make that click. But if I take a voltage reading I do get 24 volts

With all the different ignitors out there, ohm readings will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer... Some are good with ohms between 15-100, some are still good with ohms into the 400's...(Norton low-temps...)

Seems the hot surface ignitors I run across are 115 vac. I just plug them into a wall socket to see if they work. I always check the voltage to the ignitor first just to be sure.

Come to find out it was a bad gas valve. Once in a while it would operate normally and other times nothing. After replacing the valve last month no more calls. Hopefully it stays that way. Thanks for the replies.
