Suggestion for FORUM

My son, 8 years old would like to join HVAC-TALK. Yes he love HVAC, and want to get his EPA card already.
I was wondering could we start a Kids sections, (like ASHRAE has) Yup train them young. They could be sponsored by a parent, and have their own screen name.

My Son thinks their membership should be called the “ PTAC” and the Adult call the RTU, Pros called the Chillers.
Rules: no personal information allowed (emails, phone #, Locations, Schools,). No suggestive, rude or off color language or conversation.

What do you think?

My son say he eagerly await your reply

Cool Idea! Now if I can only get my 19 yr old interested. He has asked a few times if he could get work with us. (of course company rules prevent it) but If I could do more (dare I say it) sidework... I would lo9ve for him to learn. Even if he didnt want to do it forever... at least it would make him use his noggin! at least for something more than a hat rack!

That's exactly what I was thinking. :D

I really like the idea of doing something on HVAC-Talk for the younger crowd. After all, they are the future of the trade. The possiblilty of adding a new forum specifically for them to use for learning HVACR is therefore certainly a worthwhile idea to investigate.

I'm just thinking unofficially and out loud here, so please bear with me on this.

The major stumbling block here as I see however, it is how to make it work within the site and if it can be blessed by the powers that be.

The first issue I see is if it's to be a new Forum specifically for kids then access has to be defined and controlled. This is something the Membership Committee would have to decide, but it would appear to me that a "Junior Member" should be sponsored by an active Professional member of H-Talk. Possibly we could set up an application and approval process where the Pro Member submits the application with signed assurances that the Junior Member would be properly supervised in all aspects of his activities and "experiments" with HVACR. We definitely don't want to anyone getting hurt. Also, requiring sponsorship would help eliminate the possiblity of "big children" from getting in and posing as Junior members.

Who can access this new forum is a big factor here. Of course, there's the Junior Members and their Pro Member sponsors who need access. Do we want all Pro Members allowed access? I dunno about that. Do we want all regular member allowed access? I'd say no, because I think this forum belongs in one of the Pro Sections....possibly even in the Educational Forums. ;)

Then, how would a Junior's Forum be set up and what would the content be? We have to visualize what we want and set it to writing....create a detailed plan.

Again, I'm just thinking aloud here. But after tossing out some of my ideas and concerns, let's continue to define exactly what we all would like to do so we can make a proper presentation to Admin and Penton. They have the final say in all of this.

Thinking out Load
The Kid section we can follow similar safety format for the other children site. I agree with all you’ve brought up. You Must be sponsored by a Pro. To post.
Only member of the Jr area can get into The post and read in this Section.
There would also be a read only Jr section with , experiment to do, fun facts, school project ideas, ect.. It could be broke down by age groups.
We could have a Section for Teacher to ask help and Ideas, Ex “Any good ideas for lab to explain heat transfer or even Latten heat to 1st or 2nd grades. They could be regular member or listed as Youth Educators and submitted Ideas for others to use and share.

Just some thought.
If we want a brightr future We need to help make it.:)
