I looked quickly at a rtac 140a today with another tech who was showing me around the building. I was told one circuit had a leak and I need to go back sometime this week to find it. I was just wondering if you guys know of any problem areas on these machines that you have came across a refer leak. TIA Fitz...

Depending on the build year the the Suction Isolation Buttefly Valve can be a refrigerant leak problem
i am not so sure that it depends on the year any more!

Wasn't there a service bulletin that applied to a run of RTACs about the bolts on the flanges of the butterfly valve being too long, and they would bottom out and not properly seat the gasket? And the fix is to remove bolts (one at a time), add washers, and re-install and torque bolts? If memory serves, and this is true, a serial number would help these guys identify if yours is covered by it. Or you could just go ahead and do it anyway and see if it helps. Just please be sure you don't add too many washers so the bolts don't get enough "bite".

Let's see, we have had leaks on one condenser coil, one butterfly, and numerous pipe thread leaks on plugs, transducers, reliefs, etc. This is on about 24 circuits that we take care of.

Suction isolation valve was the culprit. I went my local trane vendor and had them print me the service bulitien. One circuit lost it's 165lbs charge. I installed the lock washers on the flange bolts but it's still leaking slightly. The cooler was drained in the fall but never had any glycol pumped in. The unit hasn't been started for the cooling season yet. I sniffed the other circuit and found the butterfly vale leaking there as well. I'm going to order the replacement valve kit for both circuits. I noticed when I was pressure testing the flat circuit with nitro that I could hear what sounded like marbles chattering in the compressor. Any thoughts on that. Thanks for the help guys.. Fitz
