I have inherited a multi building site with a comm bus that isn't exactly to BACnet spec to put it mildly. It works fine about 80% of the time, but other times it just goes offline, often in the middle of the night. It is not equipment related as I have shut off all of the equipment being controlled and yet the issue would still randomly popup. When I have been on site and witnessed the occurrence, all of the controllers are still functional and I can plug into them and communicate with them individually. Unplugging a controller in one building from the bus will bring the others back, this seems to be true no matter which building has the controller pulled. I have confirmed there are no issues with grounding or polarity.

The connection between buildings is going through an underground conduit. The cable doesn't seem to move so pulling a proper comm bus isn't going to happen.

Has anyone experimented with an RS-485 optical isolator?
