In my HVACR class, taking and passing this test is being pushed on us-- students...but how handy is it?
Is it something that employers look for? Whats the REAL benefit of having this cert? other than some knowledge.

It could be useful especially if you have never worked with blended refrigerants before. I thought about doing the one by Esco at one point and got the book but never ended up doing it even though I read the information in the book. There is some useful info in there about refrigerant chemistry, refrigerant oil properties, how to read a PT chart for Zeotropic refrigerants etc.

I think Mainstream has an online certification also - I briefly looked at that at some point. Not sure if one is better than the other but I think the Mainstream one can be done online and the Esco one is a proctored (closed book) exam.

I have seen some HVAC companies ask for the 410A cert.

Which one is your HVAC class proposing?

I have the Esco 410a Cert when 410a first came out manufactures offered it for free to help with the change from 22. I have never been asked by anyone for it? I suppose its not a bad thing to know about blended refrigerants like how to charge properly, what you should do when a leak is found, what pressures are normal etc.
