The equipment matters very little. As any and all equipment DEPENDS on a qualified installer to properly size, install and set up the equipment to operate with-in the manufactures specifications.

So in the end, the equipment is only as good as the installer. So, get the best installer you can find and go with the equipment he recommends.

But isn't it possible to find installers who can do a great job with all of the brands you are looking at?

Are you guys saying that if I find one or more installers that I trust to do a great job, that product still doesn't matter at that point?

At some point, with installers being equally trustworthy across their product lines, product has to play a part in performance, right?

At that point, low-end, middle-end and high-end makes a difference, right?

Give Bob and your industry a little credit that he can find more than one capable installer and at that point, it is relevant for him to know which quality of product to go with.

Can a middle aged fat woman get in on this? Take it from me and I own 23 units now, take a guess on which brands and I can just about say yes to all them. I CANT tell much difference in any brand, its all about the installer. The unit that is serviced by the most knowledgable, detail orientated HVAC guy seems to work the best, the ones serviced by the ones that have half brain seem to break down more often.

IM CONVINCED brand really makes no difference.

Ok I will answer you....LENNOX it is far better than any other brand!! Is that what you wanted? I have a Lennox system in my home and am pleased with it....but reading what I just typed I want to hit the clear field button because I don't buy that statement. There is NO BEST BRAND of equipment. A VERY good answer was just posted by CURIOUS GIRL.

In my own case, I need a 2-ton air handler that cannot be wider than about 18". The only choice among major brands appears to be Carrier/Bryant, which makes a unit 17 5/8" wide.

One problem with this guy's question is he did not specify what matters to him. So it's like asking "What's the best vehicle?", it's impossible to answer. But if you know you care most about safety, or fuel economy, in a certain size class, then certainly some brands do better than others. The OP says he just wants an average product. So yeah, he should rely on the best-recommended contractor in town to do a decent installation of whatever mid-line system that contractor prefers. Better yet, find a contractor who can draw out what's really important to the customer and is flexible enough to use the brand that best meets those needs.

Ruud/Rheem make a skinny cabinet in 2 ton too... all the 2 ton A/Hs go up to at least 15 seer (without breaking out a product catalog) above that id have to look it up

I had not even looked at Ruud/Rheem.
With the current Carrier/Bryant high-end supply problems,
you may have opened up some possibilities for me.
But I do want variable speed in the air handler,
so until I find the product data, I don't know if the Trane and Ruud options still apply.
