Hi. We recently moved into a home that was built in the 1950's. We live in South Florida, so A/c is a must all year round. The house has NO central units in it. We have been running window units for now. We need to put in central a/c but we are not clear on what is our best option. The house is about 1900 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 1 work room, aside from an open living room/dining room and kitchen that has a wall that doesn't go all the way up to the ceiling. We just replaced the roof and there are insulation boards in the roof. We still have jalosy windows by most of the windows. We have spoken to a number of a/c contractors and we have gotten a bunch of different estimates and ideas. We have NO CLUE which one to go with. We have gotten quotes from X to X for seemingly similar things. Some included electric, some did not. We have had suggestions for one 5 ton unit or 2 separate smaller units as well. The 5 ton would require running a lot of ductwork and soffets all over the house. I prefer to have separate units so that we wouldn't be running a 5 ton unit basically 24/7, but I have no clear picture as to whether that is a more efficient option or not. How much more efficient is it to run 2 separate units as opposed to one bigger unit?
I am looking for clarity, because right now I have NONE. Just a bunch of contractors, where each one tells me that the last person's methods are not good. Please advise. I prefer a system that won't run my electric bill through the roof, but will sufficiently cool down my house even on the hottest days in the middle of South Florida's impassive heat. :gah:
Thank you in advance.
