Hi all,

I 've been recieving quotes on the installation of a heat pump to be added to my existing oil fired forced air central heating system. What I'm looking for is saving on heating cost. I have a 1200sq.ft house on a full 8' foundation which is insulated. The house is well insulated as well and has new energy effieceint windows and doors. I've been quoted a 2 and a 2.5 ton unit. Can someone tell me if this estimate is appropriate.

The average summer temp here in Easten Canada is 77deg F and we experience about 1 week a year at 90 to 95 Deg F . Winter average s approx. 25 Deg F Although we occasionally see a week at or around 0 Deg F.

A true and accurate load calculation is the only way to size the equipment.
As a side not make certain when the coil is installed on the top of the oil furnace that there is sufficient clearance for air flow through the coil.

If you want to save money find an meq Mitsubishi certified dealer and put in a zuba, ditch the oil and heat with the heat pump all year round and you should be paying about what it would cost to heat with natural gas. Most of my oil or propane customers are looking at a 5 year payback on the upfront cost

What part is not true?
" A true and accurate load calculation is the only way to size the equipment."

Methodologies are:
1. Load Calculation
2. Testing of existing equipment or
3. Energy Consumption / Thermal Conditions review
of an existing thermal building envelope.

# 2 will only tell you the Btu output of the equipment not what the structure requires.

#3 will not tell you anything but speculation as to how much energy was used during a period of time. Without having a thorough data logging of all pertinent information such as ambient temperature, steady indoor temperature, run time of equipment and energy efficiency level of the equipment in reference
to how well the fuel was utilized.

In all essence # 3 is a load calculations when combined with #2 and all other pertinent data that is required.

I'm in Halifax NS which is more temperate than St John's. I used about 1750 Litres of oil = 460 US Gallons. However, a portion of that was used to heat water . I'd only be guessing but I'd say about 75 gallons for hot water.

I'm looking for a ball park number. For example, worst case for a well insulated 1200 sq ft house with high quality windows and doors. Or what's the swing on 1200 Sq ft. Are you're telling me that the only thing I can do is a full analysis? Is any contractor doing an estimate, going to spent the time and money to do a full analysis at the quote stage?

It would be rather hard to give you an estimate if he does not know what you need. They could guess just like 90% of all others do and you would more than likely end up with a system that is to large.
You are probably on the 2 ton side

You live alone. or wife and kids. 75 gallons for hot water seems low.

Thanks guys. I'm starting over by asking for new quotes accompanied with calculations. I guess I'll have to become educated as well so I can understand what they're proposing.
