I was out looking at new vehicles this weekend and GM Canada has a deal until the end of the month where they throw in free Onstar and XM Radio for 2 years as well as basic service (OFL's).

The XM would probably be nice to have but I don't know anybody with Onstar in their vehicle.

From what I have read on line the cell phone feature is very basic and some of the other features are OK but not a must have (remote unlock).

If you have it feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

I had it on my 2002 Pontiac Bonneville. Voice activated, totally hands free and very handy.

Was never in an accident that would activate the "air-bag auto call", but that was a good thing in my mind to have.

The only problem I had at the time, was when I ran out of minutes, I had to pull over to "refill" my minutes.

It's great while everything is included.

Once you start having to pay, it is costly.

Mine is currently deactivated.

Frustrating when you hit the call button by mistake on the steering wheel..."on star ready":D

When it first came out it was the cats ass, but now it is out dated and overpriced what with GPS units and all.
The only good thing is the remote unlock.
If its free, coo, l and the XM is awesome, but like the guy said, it is costly and when it expires forget it.

Thanks for the info folks.

The biggest deal killer with Onstar is I don't like there is no cellphone *code to transfer the onstar number to a different number (cell or landline) if I'm not in the vehicle to answer it. Or if there is its not shown on the onstar web page.

As for directions each year I just buy the new city map book so I don't know if I would use that part of Onstar.

In the newer vehicles Onstar is really nice, my wife has a 07 Suburban, and
daughter has 07 Tahoe both with navigation and XM built in. The cell phone
works with the driver info center, but the XM traffic with navigation is easier
to use than Onstar gps. If your car does not have built in navigation, then
the Onstar gps will most likely be good.

If it is free for 2 years take it. I had a 03 Suburban years ago with only
Onstar, and it was ok, but that was the older generation.

onstar

Just another way for you to spend money with them and that step by step navigation cost money so if you got it spend it. I like the hands free and you get a phone number for truck.

My car has hands free phone, you set it up with your cell phone, no biggie.
Onstar will be Gonestar in a few years, you watch.

Have/had it on the 03 Suburban, never used it. They wanted $50-$100 to upgrade the "old" analog to the "New" digital. Forget that. If the wife needs directions she call one of the kids and has them do it from their phones.

If I need GPS then I am lost anyway !

I had it free for several months with my Grand Prix. The hands free phone is nice and because it's satellite based you don't lose sevice with a cell phone too far from towers. Also if you lock your keys inside they can do an unlock.

The monthly cost is expensive if you have to pay and you cannot have the phone independent of the on-star package.

So I didn't continue with the service.
