Good afternoon,

I will be having a new furnace & a/c installed in the spring. The contractor I use is currently installing Keep-Rite. I currently have Heil equipment, which he installed (it has been relatively trouble free aside from a few nuisance issues). I understand these are both made under the ICP umbrella. Anyway, maybe a silly question, but thought I would ask:

If you were the installing / servicing contractor, which would you prefer to work on?

Keep-Rite model G97CMN or G96CTN? The installing contractor lives a couple of doors down & I really like him, but he was blunt with me and said by the time any issues start to creep up with either of these he would probably be dead (he's in his mid 80's now).

Price difference between the 2 does not have any bearing on my decision.

Thanks for your time everyone.

Cheers, Brendan

The one that is installed properly... :)

If the G97 is a modulating furnace... those require the ductwork to be installed properly and airflow to be balanced (or you will have hot/cold rooms)... lots of specific issues there.
AND... a small % of HVAC folks at this point know how to work on MOD furnaces.

Other than that... choose what you like... :)

If this is a choice between the 2 options you gave us I'll say the 96. It's simpler and easier to diagnose for the most part.
If it's my choice of brand to work on? I'll say Goodman. They seem to be the ones we get the most residential service calls on.
Therefore I know them pretty good.

Heil and Keep-Rite “I understand these are both made under the ICP umbrella” which is under the Carrier umbrella.

I prefer to work on Goodman and any of the Rheem variants. Thermal Zone, Weatherking, there may be others.

I have never been a Carrier fan and Trane managed to eventually convince me to just stay away from both their equipment and their rubbish customer service and their so-called warranties. I've adopted the JDL Slogan: Never Again!

BTW: after your neighbor gave me that advice I would want to know if he's planning to live to 125 or to 90. <g>
