I think it's moisture.

Old 30year old system, Evan is good, compressor was seized. Installed new 1.5 r22 (don't ask, I know) unit.

Flushed with nitrogen and proflush.

Installed new driers. Vacced down to 300 micron or so. It held.

Filled up, running beautiful, 15mins or so, unloading heat as it should...., then started just blowing cold air.

looked down, and only the suction half of filter to compressor is icing. Wtf? Filter has 2 service valves on it.

One says 5psi, other says 120.

Im assuming it's plugged, so upon installing another filter, while system is empty and open, what other precautions/to do?

When I pulled vacuum from one side I kept teasing nitrogen through other side to help carry out moisture. I dunno. This is a first in my book.

If you have to ask that type of question I feel sorry for the complex owners.

5 & 120 x the drier B S your not a tech.

New outdoor unit on antique evan which I assume is evap? You probably learned that at your complex but in the real world, install a new matching coil for the 13 SEER outdoor unit.

Well, I knew I was in for a battle when I tried to recover, after trying to hard start the compressor with 3x the capacitors.

When recovering, the service valves kept icing with water and plugging, even the gauge set I could feel it turn hard and crunch when opening/closing.

So out of convenience, these driers have service ports on both ends, so a quick check when it started having fits confirmed it was plugged with more moisture.

I just finished cutting it out and brazing a new one, so far so good.

Appreciate the tips!

Sorry guys, I don't make the call on the equipment.

Evan was evap, a- hole phone autocorrextion.

I'd like matching 410a, but they insist on dry r22 units, buy overpriced r22, and pump it through an old acoil because it "never goes bad".

I write what I need, they send me what they think I need.

/me shrugs.

We have used only flared filters dryers for years. Put a valve on one side and the condenser has a valve on the other side. Then you can change the filter dryer real easy.

Sounds like a plan.

In the 80 I've replace, never had one this nasty. So I never gave though to have a setup for quick switching.

I guess a pointless post. I was just doubling checking with 2nd opinions.

The first 2 were offensive!

Compressor still buzzed and hummed. Just wouldn't turn. Hardtart trick was a fail, so at that point I was instructed to replace and put a new outdoor against the 30yo orginal acoil.

I laughed. Then got angry at the recover battle. So much water in the system. Oil was putrid yellowish.

I found out a few months ago, as I transfered here a year ago, that to cut costs, the previous guy here had been charging empty lines with juice out of the recovered tank....

So who know what git pumped where all over this property. It was admited they'd ask another property's recovery tank when their own was empty, inst ad of pumping in fresh clean stuff.

Its ridiculous. I'm always having a laughing, wide eyed, jaw dropping day.

I get paid decent to do whatevee they want with their money.

I just make sure I don't vent the stuff.

/me shrugs

Just a clue. Are you okay with that? I don't want to offend :roll eyes:

No one can tell from your number of posts or your screen name if you are a tech, a HO, a DIYer, or what.

I'm assuming Evan is evap, and not the name of a helper.

Compound that inability to tell who you are with what should be straightforward information about troubleshooting that is not being given by the poster, and I will ask, YES!

Are you a tech?

If you are a tech, great. Get pro membership so we can offer more in-depth help in the closed forums.

Got it?

Good.

Always use a filter when reusing refrigerant from a recovery cylinder.

Problem with chemical flushes. they can loosen crud, that may not come out right a way. But would have remained where they were, if flush had not been used.

I used to find that same dynamic with transmission fluid changes.

Your compressor came all apart inside dispersing garbage into the system. Wiring varnish .. ash .. mechanical shavings etc.
Replace the drier .. you are doing a cleanup. Your lucky the metering device isn't full of crap or the capillary tubes in the evaporator (yet).

Flush with pro flush, purge with nitrogen and vacuum to below 300 microns for 2 hrs. Repeat this cycle daily until they replace the coil. BWAHAHAHAHAHA. Sometimes the owners of these place are silly. You know what they say, "You can't fix stupid!"
