I have set up dozens of Nest thermostats for customer. I do not sell them or make any money off of them.

I have a lot of customers who are quite happy with their Nest thermostats. The best is version 3.
Why don't you make money? Seems like a poor business model to not make money on something.

They are happy because they don't know any better, were sold something they really didn't need, spent $+/- and will give their honest opinion to you, etc?

Maybe I'm just too much of a pessimist.

I make money on the install and setup. Not the product. Most are high end customers and pay me well for an hours work or less. I also end up getting other work from every one of them. It does pay the bills.

I have to conclude that I will sell them what they want, not what I think they need. That is not my job.

Don't be such a spoil sport. I am not selling them a T-87. I think most of the guys on here are afraid of the Nest for some reason or another. I have had very good luck with them. But I did go through the online training and understand how they work.

Why would you need training to understand how they work? It's not complicated!!!

While I would not sell it to a customer, because I would educate them on better options, if it was on site and they were dead set on it, I'd install it. Like you, make money on the labor.

Curious thing locally...
The power companies are literally giving away NESTS...

IMO there HAS to be an alternative reason... wonder what is in the fine print...
I wonder if the power companies are gonna get in on the game of collecting information on citizens and selling it to the govt???
People DO realize... that is the #1 income source for Google...

Peak limiting. If the customer opts in, the power company can use the Nest to peak limit just like they do with the smart meters.
