I am interested in a Lennox XC15 because I want the quietest condenser I can get, but our local Lennox dealer doesn't exactly get a stellar rating on the only review site I could find them listed on. I called a local company with a much better reputation, and they said they can't get Lennox equipment because they are not an official Lennox dealer. Leaving aside the usual stuff about "the most important things is the installation" and "pick a good contractor and let them choose the equipment", is it really true that I am stuck with little or no choice because the manufacturer will only sell to certain people?

Yes, to some extent I think this may be true especially in certain areas. I work for a Lennox dealer and while I do think the XC15 is a really nice unit, if the local Lennox doesn't have a good reputation I would be cautious. Even though XC15 may be what you want, if it is installed improperly you may have a lot of problems that I'm sure you won't want.
If I were you here is what I would do.
1. Find out more about the Lennox dealer, specifically what kinds of complaints are made about them. If you give them your business keep in mind this may or may not be issues that you have.
2. Find out exactly what kind of equipment the other well recommended dealer you speak of would install for you. Tell them that you want a very "quiet" unit. Believe me there are plenty of other brands of equipment out their that may work just fine for you. If they are a Bryant/Carrier dealer ask them about there Infinity line ... very nice features and pretty darn quiet as well.

Hey! if the guy is a Dave Lennox Premier Dealer, as to see his "Customer Satisfaction Score"

It will tell you a lot about his installations, his customer service etc, you can't fake it!

Not sure what 63 db is for noise compared to 74 db, but tranes 15i is rated at 74 db, and the one i put in my Dad's house I have to open the window right next to it to hear it running at all, and I have to really listen. If that's 74 db, then I think there are a lot of units out there that you would be happy with. Though there are a few out there that can be rather noisy too.

(A fujitsu mini split condenser is around 50 db and you practically have to put your ear to it to hear it running)

Lennox. I like their equipment but, I don't like how they run things.

Let's see, 30 or 40 minutes on hold while trying to reach someone in tech support. A 20 to 30 minute wait to order parts. If you ever need to talk to someone in inside sales, plan on a 30 minute wait to reach an answering machine. Plus, they won't call you back. While it's possible reach a TM on their cell, don't expect them to do anything.

That's because all of us Premier Dealer's get put in front of other Lennox dealers who get put in front of everyone else, they program all of our phone numbers into their system, it pays to be a Dave Lennox Premier dealer! :D

Think of it this way, do you visit a Dodge dealership to buy a new Mustang? Or a Chevy dealership to buy a new Charger? Nope.

I noticed that there appear to rating standards for measuring sound. I've seen the same condensor rated at both 70dB and 74 dB.

Ultimatly the location will make a bid difference. A very short unit with a 78 db rating could be quieter tha na taller unit with a 75 db rating because many homes have foundations sitting above grade, so if a condneser is short, it's sitting 1' below the subfloor of at the first level, while a taller unit may have the compressor located right at the floor lvel and the fan is 3' above floor level.

I discoved this when replacing a much smaller 15+ y/o Bryant A/C unit with a new Trane XL16i HP that stands almost 2' taller. Even though it's quieter, it projects the sound more. If I had realized this, I would've had it located another 12" further from the wall, and that would set it about 6" lower as well (down slope).

Good luck maybe there is another dealer that does service you area but isn't what you would call "local" but still can be there in 30-40 minutes.

As suggested already, make sure to research the dealer and the type of complaints. It could be bad customer service, poor installs, a cranky customer or credit deals through third party creditors (which they have no control over).

There is a local dealer that lists this on his website:

"We believe that no single manufacturer makes the best equipment in every product line. By representing many of the top manufacturers, we can objectively advise you of the best product for your particular application, including Lennox, Ruud, Carrier, Bryant, Trane, Amana, Rheem, Comfortmaker, Goodman, Janitrol, GE, and York just to mention a few."

He is not listed on any manufacturer website as a FAD. How is he getting the equipment and do warranties apply?

I would use a lennox dealer for Lennox, and what ever dealer for what ever brand.

The guys that have deals to buy a unit from another dealer, can be good guys, and well trained.

But, you can't find that out, until after the install is done.
And by then, its too late.
And getting a factory rep out, for a unit not installed by a dealer, can be diffilcult.
