Considering getting a home appliance plan for rental unit I have. Place was built in 2001 so things are started to go wrong here and there. I am looking at the contract book for AC and it says it only provdes "Limited leak repair" and is defined as leaks that do not require pump down and/or receovery (not opening the system). I assume this means they dont fix if it is the condensor or inside the unit, but will fix any lines outside? Question is then when there is a freon leak how often does the fix need to be "pumped down". I just don't want to be paying for a service that most likely won't be covered in their plan.

Thanks

Those plans are a basic rip off. If - and that is a big if, they accept a claim the repair will either be attempted (very rarely actually fixed) by one of their bottom of the barrel hacks that they have on call or if you choose to have it done outside of their network the amount they will pay out will not cover squat. Don't waste your time or money.

I cant speak for that energy company, but our company does work for a local energy company. It is actually a gas provider that offers the warranty but they cover AC too. There are some limits to what it will cover but it can save you a lot of money in the right circumstances. I have on many occasions done repairs for customers that would have cost them $400 or more. We are authorized to do repairs up to a certain dollar amount ( a set number and a rather high one but I wont divulge that info here) without further authorization. If the repair is more than that amount then we have to be authorized by the "insurance" company before we can do repairs.

That being said, if you have to pay, lets say for example a monthly fee of 20 per month, in one year you would have only paid 240. If you need a repair, that can really pay off. But if your repairs are minor or there are no repairs at all, then you wasted a lot of money.

Its a gamble really for both parties, but they wouldn't offer the service if they didn't win more often so keep that in mind.

(And just to clarify not all people that do work for companies like this are hacks.)

Right, I have already had to fix the water heater (thermocouple) and furnace myself. The plan I was thinking about covers furnace, water heater, range, fridge, washer, dryer, and AC for $27 a month so $324 a year. Would have already paid off this year, but you are right it's a gamble. Like I said most of the appliances are going on 10 years now.

Thanks

Its a difficult thing to answer really, because yes, if you have some repairs that need done it can save you money, a lot of money sometimes. But what if that thermocouple and that furnace repair are the only repairs you have to do for the next few years. You never really know so no one can give you good advice. You will either be really glad or kick yourself, no matter which way you go.
