For reference the Canadian Gas code states.

4.21.1 When the heat exchanger of a furnace installed in a dwelling unit is found to be defective it shall be replaces.

4.21.2 The heat exchanger referred to in clause 4.21.1 is found to be defective may be temporarily repaired if necessary and the repairs shall be in accordance with procedures acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.

I would assume that the gas code for the various states would have something similar
"It shall be replaces".....is that the ebonics version of the code////lol

Has anyone had to work on direct fired make up air units. The flame is right in the air stream. Talk about products of combustion. We had a couple on a auto body shop for the paint booth and three on a high school gym. Load that gym with two teams and screaming parents , the CO would get a little high.

Didn't know such a thing existed. Guess that would be 100% efficient heat exchange.

Must be some special rules to be sure enough fresh air is taken in. Wonder what would happen if you throttled the inlet air down to a minimum?

I have worked on a fair amount of them. They used to be common for hospital kitchens - I don't know why. Of course the exhaust system air volume has to match the make-up-air effect of the directed fired heating unit.

Cambridge and CaptiveAir make tons of those direct fired units. Though I tend to see Cambridge units in warehouse settings and Captive units in kitchens.
Have to make sure the building has plenty of exhaust or air exchange.

Its supposed to be Engineered with the Conditioned air as well the Kitchen is t=not the limit.... Total Building Pressure is involved

right on the first point
Wrong on the second .
in Maine is is 100# illegal to repair any heat exchange by welding it or patching it.
the company who lost also got a huge fine and has lost a lot of clients once word got out.
i realize each state is different however.

i could if i looked but i don't see the need to.
of a pro says its illegal in his or her state why disbelieve him or her?
just like if you said doing X in you're state was illegal i would take you're word for it as you are a tech in that state and know its laws ect.

I am just thankful that your state finally approved heterosexual sodomy.

So all I have to do is tell you that it is legal in my state, and you will believe me. Got it.

the question still remains why would a pro lie about a state code or law in his her state?
you have yet to answer that question properly.
i go by the code book in my state.
if you believe me or not i don't care you don;t sign my paycheck:)
my boss does and him and the code enforcement and code books are the only ones i answer to besides my boss:)

Let me get this straight.

The question was: "what is the specific law or ordinance that forbids the repair of heat exchangers", and your response was "I could look it up, but I don't feel it's necessary to because I'm a pro and I wouldn't lie about it".

And somehow, we're the a$$holes?

But that was rhetorical. Because I live in California. Where simply putting one foot in front of the other can be illegal.
