Also an update. I have been checking out things lately. Every mall I have worked in or bigger commercial place has all kinds of thing hangning from the bottom struts of the I-beams. Heavy 6" sprinlker pipes, electrical conduits, big air handlers, you name it. I ain't seen one thing hung from the top yet. Old malls, new malls, other sites, checked it a lot since I got spanked about it.
I have some pics if ya wana see em.....

I think he was refering to hanging off the bottoms of bar joists where the small tack weld is all that is holding it, not I-beams .......... I better quit commenting on your threads or my invite to pitts will be lost in the mail lol
by the way I have seen one of those pulled apart with a chainfall hoisting an airhandler made a believer out of me and before you ask, I hang all small stuff off the bottom unless plans call for siesmic restraint so don't call me a dirty name like zonko or something

An engineer refused to let us use belly bands on some sprial ductwork we were to install. He was concerned about the looks because it was going in an office and the finished ducts where to be painted. He was concerned that if the duct got bumped or moved the duct under the strap would show the metal.

So he specified that no bands would be used. Instead he wanted a hole drilled in the top of the duct. The rod goes right inside of the duct (a few inches). A nut and washer on the inside and out side. We though he was nuts. But low and behold it was quick and easy to do it this way. Plus you same money on the hardware and it looks great.

And dice, don't let them mean kids pick on you. Some times in these old mills around here we hang duct from old wooden roof trusses.
