good idea to replace contactor?

Hello Everyone,
Well I made it through the winter in Florida with running the heat just a few nights & used my ecobee to run back up heat & not the heat pump when the
temp falls below 39 and it worked.

Now as spring and summer are coming in a few months I will have my package unit nordyne air conditioner system cleaned and inspected In about a month just like I always do twice a year

the last time the technician came out was about 4 months ago

everything was fine He did remark that my contactor Was a little bit weak He said it should get me through for a while but the next service
I should consider replacing it He quoted me a price with labor and installation through the ac company which I thought was a bit high I know I cannot mention prices
But I can tell you that I did find a contactor brand new on the internet from a supply store for less than it would cost me to go to Wendy's
and have lunch for 2 of us.
I only hope that when I call the technician to come out that he'll be fair when it comes to installing

Is it labor intensive to replace it ?? It looks like you just unplug it and plug it back in It shouldn't take it more than 10 minutes That's what
I'm thinking but I won't try I am not a HVAC guy.. But it looks like a simple repair. The AC company that I use I asked the technician
if he would come by on his own time And do a cleaning on my system and then do work for me on of the side& he said he sure would

Seems like a win win for both of us I wont have to spend say 30 wendys lunches to have my ac cleaned & checked & I get

the benefit of the certified ac tech and he gets a few extra bucks. He has been good to me And he comes out every 6 months and keeps
my system in top shape & he is honest too.. I am glad he is willing to come out onhis days off & service my ac system.

Just looking at the contactor & where its located on my ac system it looks like a quick fix Hope I am right & I feel good helping the employee
that can use the extra $ these big ac companies make tons & pay the help so little...

FYI Some of you might remember me posting here before because this particular AC unit was a refurbished unit that I found on the internet from this air conditioning company and I was leery about buying it
because it had a defective coil & that was replaced with a new one then refurbished, cleaned & purchased by me ( it is now 9 years old) but after careful consideration I bought it and that was over two years ago and I've had no trouble with it whatsoever it's been a great system however I do have it serviceed twice a year maintenance goes a long way But I got a great deal on it and I'm very happy with it It works well and I just want to keep it maintained.

He did remark that my contactor Was a little bit weak

Describe weak?

He will throw in a cheap made in China contactor that will last couple years before the contact points pit from arcing. Trip charge, minimum one hour labor, parts and labor tax is what you will be paying. Since prices are regional who knows what they charge in your parts of the woods.

If I remember correctly, you have a warranty on that used/refurbished unit, using the previous owners warranty that you mentioned in previous posts that the Contractor was going to use and cover for you no? If so that contactor should be covered under a 10 year parts warranty no? Labor chargeable thou..

What made him come to the conclusion that the contactor was a little bit weak?

glad you asked He showed me on a multimeter some numbers and tested it in front of me and showed me, and he told me that the numbers were a little low not horrible Not enough to replace right away BUT He said The next time that I would service the ac system and get it cleaned which I do every 6 months it would be a good proactive decision to do so I don't remember exactly what the numbers were but he did tell me they were a little low he said Definitely keep it for now but when you get it serviced in the spring I should replace it. And seeing that part cheaper than 2 wendy burger meals I figure good insurance against any issue? as long as it is as I suspect, a quick swap out?

Contactor and all parts is covered for another year as you mentioned previous owner registered it, and the Contractor was going to give you the previous owner 10 year parts warranty if memory serves me correctly? So if they want to replace it, it’s on their dime no?

yes it's covered BUT I didn't want to cause issue with the guy having to use the old owner's name ect.. especially since that part is so inexpensive & I can get the part knowing it's from Nordyne.

replacing the capacitor early last year was the only thing I have done to this system other than 2 x a year cleaning & check the system and service/clean it.

I did get a amrad capicitor because everyone I spoke to said its way better than the cheap once that most ac techs use. Now the contactor will be the next thing to do (being proactive) and the part is so cheap I Don't want to trouble the ac company to go through all that to order that cheap part. Plus its not " broken" I am wanting to change it because its a little weak.

I haven't had any trouble with this unit at all just maintenance and it works fantastic The AC gets super cold and the heat gets super hot I'm very happy with this unit just maintaining it so far. i but I don't want to let something go and then have it turn into a big problem.

I got very lucky to get a like new ac system for way less than half what a new one costs & the issue with it before it was sold to me was that it had a leak in the coil & was replaced under warranty with a brand new one & the unit was then serviced, cleaned ,tested and well "refurbished" when I got it.

the word refurb scared me BUT fast forward 2 years and now going on 3, I am glad I got this ac system. it works very well so far. I hope to get 5 years more at least out of it. As much as I maintain it I should. I also change my filters every month & the last service I got that tech remarked how clean it looked & all the pressures he tested he said were "spot on." He said maintain it & be glad you got what you got for what you paid he said he knew the background on my unit & told me I got very lucky because units like that do NOT come along often.

Bazooka Joe Am I thinking correctly when I say that replacing the contactor is as easy as it looks when you open the panel it's right there You just unscrew the old one and plug in the new one

That's what it looks like to me.. simple fix?
