I noticed a couple issues with our gas vent: the rain cap is crooked (off by about 5 degrees, but still appears to be secure), and it's missing a storm collar.

The roof was replaced in 2007 (by the previous homeowner), so I'm guessing it's been like that for at least that long.

I noticed storm collars are pretty universal on these vents, but at the same time it hasn't been a problem for at least 6 years (at least, we've seen no evidence of leaks in that area).

Should I go ahead and correct these issues now, or would it be OK to wait until the next time some major roof work is done?

storm collars are there for a reason, Id get one on it as it shouldnt be difficult, why wait untill it is a problem, not to mention your peace of mind

You need to find the make (Metalbestos, Thor, Air Jet, Duravent, etc.) of your flue to get the correct storm collar.

I have no idea what the brand is, the vent stack itself is probably the original, installed when the house was built in 1988. If I post a picture of the rain cap might the brand be recognized or would I even find something that would still work?

that collar should work on nearly all models of b vent, to be sure, because the pipe manufacturer might not be evident, you should measure the outer diameter of existing pipe, and sealant isnt neccesary

One size doesn't always fit all. He could get a universal storm collar, but that's not how I roll. I can easily get the right collar, so that's how I do it. But not everyone is as anal as I am.
