oh gosh, i usually start with 13 or 14 pounds, just throw it in there and see what happens. by the way, just kidding....back away from the gauges,get the yellow pages and dial a number...
 
You don't just need to know the SH. If your return air is to cold it can also cause a freeze up. It feels like you are focused on a smaller part of a larger picture. I work in commercial HVAC my shop did work on more then 450 units last year. We used less then 300 lbs of R-22 last year and I know 80lbs of that was on two large systems. Not enough refrigerant is vary rarely the problem.
