Duct Cleaning

Anyone on here offer duct cleaning services? I recently saw an article related to NADCA and made me think of this question.

Do ducts really need regular cleaning? I generally assumed if they did there is likely some issue like a leak from unconditioned spaces.

You can email me the link and I can post it that or if I get a few minutes I might look it up myself because I like to post that one every now and then.
I've known of a couple of situations where duct cleaning would be legitimate but generally it wouldn't actually be effective because you want to be able to do a good enough job. The only situation where I think ducts should either be cleaned or replaced is with mold on internal insulation such as duct board or internally insulated plenums then they just need replaced or mouse droppings.
The problem is usually duct cleaning is highly ineffective. Even so the placebo effects on the convinced homeowner are amazing. [emoji1787]

As I see it you don't need ducts cleaned, just a good filter. Have you ever looked in a duct system during a change out. My experience has been the supply duct is relatively clean the return is the dirtier of the 2. So if you have a really good filter it will catch anything that comes through the return and the supply will stay clean. Simple, easy.

I have a page on duct cleaning here.

It includes links to the five studies on duct cleaning that I know about, including one sponsored by NADCA. Duct cleaners seem to ignore that study. The study they seem to favor doesn't actually prove anything about duct cleaning.

With rare exception, duct cleaning is a waste of money at best. If there are any studies I missed, please share.

I just saved that page because you do a much better job of explaining than me.
Excellent job.
I would like to share that on Facebook in a local group if you don't mind.

It figures. Our social media overlords don't mind censoring. Given their ownership, it's nice that this forum still allows for dissenting voices.

Oh... excuse me for a moment. There's a half-dozen young men in camo at my door. New fashion trend? Anyway, the do have some nicely polished boots. Maybe they're selling cookies.

This is a locally run group and I think they may have mistook my post as advertising which is not allowed.

Lets be logical here. Duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning is a joke.

Why stick some wiggle worm down there that gives some false sense of security. It is a huge scam.

If you have issues then let me replace the damaged product. Wiggling some whirly-gig inside of your ducts and spraying it with a "sanitizer" is laughable. The real-world results are nonexistent.

You tell me that duct cleaning helps with a straight face and I have some beachfront property in Kansas to sell you.

Interesting topic since I am taking a stab at cleaning my own ducts.

Locally the base charge for a "pro" to come out is $xxx and up. The places that run a camera in before and after typically a lot more money.
They want to sell you the duct sealing and family truckster deluxe package........

To be honest for $xxx or more I would rather run new metal.

I purchased a couple air tools , an air whip and a ball tool to run from a compressor for around $xx to give it a try.

I think I posted this earlier but here I go again.

Some years back I found an EPA study that says to properly clean a duct system in a residential application it would take 16 to 32 man hours. So that would be 1 guy 4 days or 2 guys 2 days. Most companies I have seen are 1 or 2 guys 4 hours and they are gone. Second I know roughly what these companies charge for these 4 hour jobs and I know of few if any people that would pay for the 32 hour job.

So to save money on my new duct install, I personally tore down all my old obsolete duct work and when doing so, there was blankets of dust, wool, hair, soot, dander, carpet fuzz, etc inside all of the return panning, and also inside the very small and undersized return trunk. Even with a P100 mask on, I was itchy and was sneezing up a fit. From a common sense standpoint, please explain how a duct cleaning would not be beneficial had I chosen to keep this ductwork in place and just reconnect new equipment to it?

Duct cleaning is always such a hot topic. There are just so many slimeball companies out there that use horrible equipment. Rotobrush and Ram air come to mind. The problem is that there is such a low barrier to entry and no state or government oversite to warrant any trust. The best way to go about it is to be completely transparent with customers, use high powered air lines with a minimum CFM of 24, and a negative air vacuum that pulls no less than 5000 CFM. Often times, we get calls for air ducts cleanings in Milwaukee and I will tell customers the honest truth. Most think that this is a silver bullet to fix all their dust issues. I tell them that this service is not to fix your dust issues. First off get your carpets, furniture and drapery cleaned since those are the biggest dust filters in peoples homes. It improves furnace efficiency and cost of filters, that's about it.

Why are we suddenly bringing up old threads about duct cleaning. Seems to me someone is trying to advertise here.

Just my 2c as a homeowner, we did hire a reputable company to come out and do our duct cleaning. We have 2 AC units, '77 built home that we have lived in for over 7 years. My wife and kid have asthma so that's the reason we went with it. 2 days after duct cleaning, we notice our allergic reactions decreased in frequency and a month after, our asthma decreased noticeably especially when inside the home. I myself was skeptical after reading the EPA paper but our experience is the opposite so I guess it may be beneficial especially if you hire the right company with the right equipment and also suffering from allergies or asthma like us. We are in Altlanta so we used AirDuct Rescue for our home air duct cleaning.
