Untwist your knickers boys and girls. Don't you recognize a counterflow exhaust when you see one?

The only thing I really see wrong with it is that the installer didn;t use enough silver tape at the top on the elbow to stop the moisture from leaking out. There's a potential for CO there. My biggest problem with the install is there should be a cover on the service switch.

That and a lack of a fire stop where ht goes throough the ceiling. Or, is it the floor?

WHATEVER,

WHATEVER,
Obviously no one here that has posted has seen this "counterflow exhaust" you mention, so please post some more detailed info on this. I'll go down on record as saying I'm not believing such a thing exist that is approved for residential gas furnace installations, but I have been surprised many times on this site with stuff I never would have thought posible.

Counterflow Venting:

Tipsr,

In all honesty, I haven't seen gas venting done to that extreme. But I live by the adage, "They're Smart, I'm Not". So, therefore, someone must know more about venting than I do. I'm always open to learning. I thought that maybe the pipe would have looked better with more silver tape around the ell at the top. That rust stuff on the ell and running down the pipe can be a sign of potential moisture laden exhaust leakage and a potential Carbon Monoxide leakage. Always another bad sign.

Had I been asked by the installer to profer my opinion on the install, I might have politely answered, "I've never seen it done like that before. That might work for you. I've never seen it work for anyone else, but it might work for you". Anyone that does that isn't going to listen to an alternate position.

It looks like it worked for him. No one died. If you or I had done it like that, surely, someone would have died and we might be held responsible.

A late friend once told me that at first, he thought I was nuts because I would say the most outrageous things. Later, he realized that I had an ability to say the most outrageous things with an absolute straight face. That he had never met anyone with the ability to be so convincing.

I guess I can write the same.

I usually describe something like that as the work of a "Hackaroo". I'm at a loss to come up with an adjective to put before the word "Hackaroo". I was stunned. But I've seen worse.
