Anyone use locktite 545 for the threads on a 123 Chiller?

Also replacing gaskets on an Economizer. Looking for the best method without a gantry? Floor jack? Torque values on the econ flanges?

Thank Folks

As far as the torque values it depends on the vintage of the machine(what year it is made so I will know the bolt size) if it is 3/8 bolts the torque is aprox. 20 to 22 ft lbs.

To take the economizer off I use one beam and one t stand. Lay one end of the beam on top of the compressor and the other end on the t stand.

I've used loc-tite 767, you can use 545 a little more expensive, 20-24 ft.lbs don't squeeze the gasket, what size machine are you dealing w/? Floor jacks work just fine....safer to use a gantry on larger machines.

Jimbo: Thanks but I have to say sorry you have T.O.. LOL
T.O. makes things more interesting everywhere he goes! I was gonna get rid of NFL Sunday ticket because the price of it is getting rediculous, But the BILLS keep finding ways to keep me paying for another season. I don't want to miss the drama unfold!

I was in a bind on a 500 ton CVHF one time , 400 miles from the shop, and had to use a tranny jack to get the economizer off and back on and it worked out pretty good. It was not a free cooling machine though so economizer was small.

When I can, I'll rig it from both ends to try and keep it balanced. Sometimes you have to repick it a couple times to get it rotated and balanced right so the flanges line up going back on. One time I even used a forklift on a 1280 and that worked out pretty well. I'll have to try the floor/tranny jack method you guys mentioned. Sounds like it works pretty well.

How do you guys hold the gaskets in place? Two methods I have used are spray adhesive and using very fine strands of wire, like single strands from SO cord, looped through the bolt holes. It allows enough room to start a couple bolts, then slip the wire out. I've only done one economizer with the new style flanges and gaskets on a machine that leaked at startup. I'd have to say it's a big improvement over the rubber gaskets.

I removed the Econo today had some riiging stuff but not much when I get to the chiller plant. First time seeing the new gaskets on the econo evap/Cond, anyy suggestions on how to hold in place? Vacuum grease? start at the bottom flanges firt catch a couple of bolts and likewise at the interstage??

Gaskets need to go on dry just like the older rubber gaskets. Like jimbob said, silicone bead faces the bolt heads.

I like txhvac's idea of dental floss. It's hard to see the little strands of copper wire when you're up under the econo. The floss would be "high viz".

Tie strands of dental floss through the flange and gasket at the 3 and 9 o' clock positions. Get all the flanges lined up and get a couple bolts started. Then snip the floss and pull it out. Just make sure you get all of it out.

silicone bead bolt holes?

silicone bead bolt holes?
The new style gasket has a silicone bead embossed on only one side. That side has to face the flange side where the bolt heads are.

The SB that triggerhappy is sending you has the details.
