Hello:

I'd like contractor recommendations for the following unit.

Removal of existing indoor/outdoor unit, dehumidifier
and installing
an "entry level" brand associated with major manufacturers (Payne,Ducane,Goodman etc):
80% furnace (90000 BTU) & 10 SEER A/C (3 ton)
pending a full load calc.
with condensate pump for drainage
& humidifier
& programmable thermostat

The house is a 32 yr old Raised Ranch house with 2250 sq.ft (total living space) & finished basement.
Indoor unit in basement closet near chimney with easy access.
Windows and duct work are original and probably not all that air tight.

My contact info: Shaum, (c) 302-345-9444

Thank you Dash, I am trying to find a contractor in my area, thanks to you I might have come closer to my goal. Natex is a helpful site.
Your welcome, spread the word, about their site!

And before the NATE haters get here, yes a non NATE tech could easily be beter the a NATE tech. However it's a good sign when the company and/or the techs ,took the time and money to get certified.

thanks... found a couple more

the couple of contractors that I spoke to thus far hadn't even heard of NATE.
both of them seemed very comptentent...

that I say because they both came-up with the same recommendations and one of them gave me the price quote with actual model numbers ...

so I'm open to other referrals as well...

and btw: the above spec should read:
Removal of existing indoor/outdoor unit, humidifier
and installing
an "entry level" brand associated with major manufacturers (Payne,Ducane,Goodman etc):
80% AFUE standard furnace (90000 BTU output) & 10 SEER A/C (3 ton)
pending a full load calc.
with condensate pump for drainage
& humidifier
& programmable thermostat

HPguru: I'm in Hockessin

I called your number - they were gonna call me back for an aptmt.

yes - budget is an issue because I just bought the house and am low on cash that went to the down payment and closing costs.

and the HVAC was a huge surprise -
didn't know anything about HVAC before this and now I know enough to know wat to look for and not allow the realtor to gloss over this important part of the house.(i have a feeling my so called "buyer's agents" loyalties were more towards the seller than me).

anyway I bought the house because it had potential but didn't realize it was so much of a "fixer-upper" - I had to put in a new septic for about 12k. upgrade the electric from fuse/150amp to circuit breakers and 200 amp ($1500).
the kitchen and all the bathroom floors are totally messedup
and need replacing (about (4k)
the bathroom and kitchens haven't been updated (the house is 35 years old) - another (10k)

and the location has turned out to be not all that great...
and so now I'm not all that keen on putting in the "best" or even a "better" system... a "basic" or "good" should do...

anyway.. that's my sob story for the day...

btw: pl. let me know if you know of anyone that does "Goodman" in the area.

enjoy your weekend yall....

Call Newark Plumbing and Heating /Geo H Burns they letter the truck with one name on one side and the other name on the other),if you really want a cheap price, they sell Goodman.I will tell Gail to cancel appt.Just make sure you get a copy of the permit, they might try to skip it,but demand a copy "because your selling the home"I checked Island of Lost Toys, all higher end stuff. They are the low guys in DE. work is ok,not NATE or drug/backround checked, but they have been around for 70 years. As I see it they have been around the same price since 1980.But due to your scene,I would go this route. If you do ,shoot me an e-mail and I will come by before you pay them. I live in Kennett Square, and hate to see people get the SHAFT. a case of AMSTEL Light, covers all fees. heatpumpguru@comcast.net

My small pocket of reistance holds out,but it is a daily battle,we are changing the name from Mushroom capital of the world, to SH** CITY, some parts smell so bad due to the mushroom houses and what they grow them in.I really live in Unionville but they do not deliver mail. Booths Corner, what a place to get GREAT junk food!!

current dilemma

ok... i now have several options - more like dilemmas

On the one hand:
a Payne 80% std 90k btu, 10SEER 3ton, condenstate and humidifier, progammable thermostat
lets say $X (lowest bid)

to go to Payne 10SEER heat pump: $X + 800

On the other hand:
a Trane XR80 80% std (with 4 speed blower) 100k btu
and XR11 11SEER 3ton, condensate and humidfier, programmable thermostat

the above runs: $X + 600

to go to Trane 80% XL80 2 stg: $X + 800

to go to Trane 11 SEER Heat Pump with touch screen thermostat (but with standard XR80 furnace): $X + 1200

I'm getting similar quotes on Rheem/Weatherking as well

anyways... now the question is which way do I go?

depends on who is installing them, price doesnt matter as much as to which contractor is installing it,generally the trane is good, and so is payne which is the same as a carrier pretty much all carrier parts just find the most reputable company i can even give you an estimate are you in the wilmington area

yes... i'm in Hockessin

my contact info 302-345-9444

you are right about the contractors...
these are reputable...and NATE certified
and the buy was the most forthright and honest about his estimate...

he broke everything down...
parts, labor (for a given configuration.. these should be the same)
and equipment (which varies by brand/features)

infact the guy was so good a HVAC guy who knew what he was talking about and a also a great salesman - no high pressure - but a good sales pitch.

he even managed to get me to think that it MIGHT be a great idea for resale if instead of a NONAME brand - I put in a Trane (which every one - atleast second time home owners - knows about...)
even if it costs a lot more.
although I'm not sure how realistic that thought is...
because most people care more about the AGE of the equipment and condition than the brand.
