Buttwheat-- yes some strange rules companies make up their own rules and enforce them apartment complex if maintenance comes in for any reason they check AC filter and smoke alarm if filter is dirty or smoke alarm is not working the tenant gets a fine the maintenance man has to sign a paper that he check this no matter what he went there for

It's pretty common for me to spend 25% or more of my day in actual drive time. I just eat when on the road. The only time I take a dedicated lunch break is if I'm on the same job for most of the day, but that rarely happens.

Corporate hates it and wants my ass fired. But everyone at the local level loves my work and doesn't want to see me leave. Corporate is afraid of the legal ramifications, so I told them what to do, it's called an "on duty meal break". Just draft a simple document and they are legally protected. But they are too stupid to do that. And I'm too stupid to sit in the truck for half an hour after driving for more than an hour; I mean jeez, I've already eaten and ready to work.

Newoldtech- yes true and he always covers his ass with the customer and has pictures to back it up see below text about pictures and how he operates when he checked the condensation pump installed very slick fast talker checks everything twice should write a book on how to avoid callbacks - also knows a lot of tricks on how to make more time on the slow months

Not sure that sounds entirely ethical.

One way I explain to people why I am so honest goes like this: I'm not smart enough to lie.

Probably due to all the dope I smoked when I was a kid. Just don't have enough memory left to know how to pull off a good lie. Actually, there is one way I know how to lie, it's more of a technicality though. It's called the 'lie of omission'. You know, leaving out important facts. So technically, I'm not lying . . .

All that said, the truth has saved my butt more than I can count. And if I screw up on the job, there are only two things that I know to do. First, figure out how to fix it FAST. The second is to not lie about it if I have to talk about it.

Here was a fun thread: My Latest Embarrassment

Periods and commas are our friends.

Why has he told you all of this?

Is he still trying to get you to hire him?

I was doing 60-70 hrs per week this time last year. Seems like it took forever to find qualified help. Now it is much more reasonable. I would love to just work from 6am to 2pm, M-F !!

davidj001- the company the tech works for charges him $XXX per hour for call backs- time starts when he is dispatched until he gets to his next job. This charge amount is more than three times his hour rate. This charge is the same amount for the other tech's that make less $$ per hour. ($XXX per hour) And some of the regular service calls are 2.5 hour drive one way. This company does not pay travel time!:beat:

BBeerme- per #27- Could not see link.?? Do not have access.?? Tell the truth & be honest is the best way!! This area I am in extreme rip off's!!! Not always the company, sometimes the tech. Hear or witness rip off every day. Have some proof. Just one example. Copy of invoice- 4.0 ton mobile home package unit- states condenser motor bad- not working or coming on- compressor over amp- low on refrigerant- need new system $XXXXXX- & price was 4 times the cost of unit!! So how do you get a correct amp reading & know it is low on R22 when the fan is in op?? Another RIP- Spray paint compressor & charge customer for a new compressor

This comes with the territory of owning a HVAC/R business. No ones perfect call backs happen. A workman never seeing the kind of profits a business owner does cant afford to eat time so the owner never has a loss. My boss has always been happy with me and told me I will always get paid.

Are you saying the company charges the tech for callbacks? Am I understanding correctly?

I have no problem going back and working for free if I have a legitimate call back, but I'm not going to also pay out of pocket.

As an owner I just accept that sometimes "stuff happens".The service must learn from a callback if it was a miss-diagnosis .I won't tolerate the same callback problem time & time again.Equipment does fail for other reasons after you have been there and made a repair.

That's the right attitude. There are guys who get repeated call backs because they just don't get it or really don't care. Those kind of guys need to be dealt with not only from a owners perspective but also for fellow co workers who are trying to keep the integrity of the business and trade. I've worked with guys where you might as well start heading wherever they were last if you were on call. We all wished the boss would do something about it because when we were struggling to keep up on a weekend there you were wasting time on something that someone didn't care to fix right.
