Carrier-Infinity Compressor not Working After Power Failure

Hi,

I have a Carrier-Infinity that was installed in 2008. It was working fine for the last week or so. We had a power failure today and the compressor will not come back on. The indoor fan is running fine, but no compressor. I called the installer and he can;t get here until Monday.

Is there anything I can do to "reset" the compressor. The installer thought maybe capacitors. Does that sound like a reasonable thing to happen when the power goes out?

Thanks for your help,

Tom

There are some simple things that you can check, first when you enable a cooling call is the motor above the compressor running (called the condenser fan motor)? If so that means you have main power and control power going out to your condenser. You could try resetting the breaker in the pannel, turn it off for 30 seconds and turn it back on and see what happens. If that dosent work STOP there and wait for the professional, you could cause more problems for yourself if you dont have any trainning in the trade. We dont want too see you end up on EPIC FAIL.

Let the pro do it, cause the infinity stat holds any errors and problems inside it that the the tech will be able to help dx the system. If you do some of the things that GoColts suggests it'll give extra codes (depending on what the actual problem is), and it could make more problems.

What is the Infinity User Interface telling you? Is it stating there are any codes or communication problems with the outdoor unit? For a trained tech, finding the problem is relatively simple and takes a limited amount of time. For the non-initiated, you could spend hours and hours and dollars upon dollars. Call for service. It is money well invested and time well saved.

Turn the thermostat to off until tomorrow at the earliest. What probably happened was the power shut down then restarted quickly once or twice. The compressor stopped and tried to re-start immediately. Too quick for the thermostat or anything else to recognize. It tried to start under high head pressure, couldn't, overheated and shutdown. Once it has several hours to cool down without the thermostat being set at 60. It will probably restart.

Need Help!!!

I have a tech at the house who is baffled by the compressor not starting on this 2008 Carrier Infinity.

He has replaced the control board and still nothing is happening. I really dont want to go another day without air, any hints on where to go next. He says it has power to the board, still not putting any power to the DC side.

Thanks,

Tom V

Not sure, I had to head out for work before he got there today. Finally got it going after he came inside and worked with the thermostat (t-stat) for a while. Said it was because he was not patient enough with the delay between the thermostat and the compressor. He is not an authorized dealer (thought he was when we bought the unit from him in 3yrs ago). I have learned my lesson (factory authorized only).

How would I be able to look at the codes on my t-stat? I really feel like I am being lied to.

He is waiting for a couple days to bill me to see if the control board was all that was "broken/weak" from the power failure. Is this equipment really that sensitive?

Does anyone have advice on how to get some reimbursement from the electric company for the voltage issues? Maybe if it the outage was caused by a third party?

Thanks for all your help!!

yes control boards are VERY sensitive to power problems. We always recommend a whole house surge protector for any equipment that is sensitive such as the infinity.
There is a delay from the system on power up so that everything can "talk" to eachother and make sure everything is ok.

As for getting a reimbursement, go to your electric company's customer service line and they can instruct you. BUT there is ALOT of red tape for most of them.
