We have decided to do a complete replacement on our furnace and A/C unit. Goodman guy 1 came by and gave us a quote. Goodman guy 2 came by and gave us the paperwork. We asked why the price was $100 more than the quote and he looked at the sheet and said "you were quoted for a smaller cabinet size." Before we signed off we said we wanted to think it over. We downloaded the Goodman spec sheet from the net and the model numbers (quoted & priced) differed by one letter and the letter indicated cabinet size. So are we getting anything more by paying extra for a bigger cabinet? They are both 95% 90,000 BTU furnaces.

you contadicted your statement, You said he quoted a smaller cabinet and was 100 more, then you asked if larger cabinet is better for more money?

If it will fit and you have allowed clearences and such go with cheaper cab. there has to be a reason for a smaller cab. quote.

Did either one of these contractors do a Heat calculation on your home? Can a 4 ton condenser cool your space? You need to find out because both these contractors should have the same blower tonnage.

They may have done a calculation but they didn't give it to us. They never mentioned it. BTW it's not two contractors it 's the same company but one rep came out and did the quote and the other guy brought out the paperwork for the contract. Right now we have a 3 ton system and it works. the system we are going to is a dual fuel system with heat pump. Parts list from the quote says

GMVC950905CX
SSZ140361A
CAPF4961C6
50 foot 3/8 LL 3/4 SL Refrigerant Lineset
DCVK-30 - Goodman 3 Inch Concentric Vent

Parts list from the sale contract says

Uhoh!! You just threw up another red flag because the paper work says 15 seer! It's supposed to be 15 so I can get the tax credit. Even with that all said and done does that mean the cabinet size does matter?
BTW thanks to all of you guys and Merry Christmas!!

...It's also a variable speed furnace, and can be set up to handle a variety of size cfm requirements.

I wouldn't sweat over a $100 change, it may be what they have in stock and can do now without ordering a totally differant piece of equipment in.

Southern -- Yeah your right...lol. I was going off of what George said. I didnt realize the HO didnt have any model #'s down yet. My bad.

HO -- My only concern now after Southern's statement is that they didn't give you your Heat load cal. copy. I mean they don't have to give it to you but I dont know why not. It would only further show that they are trying to give you the best replacement for your application. I always give my customers a copy and if they don't understand the numbers I will sit down with them and go over it.

Best of luck and Happy Holidays.

Yes that is a red flag. I believe even a 15 SEER would not qualify for the tax credit, but you don't need to take anyone's word for it. Ask them to give you a copy of the AHRI Certificate for that combo or just the listing number and you can look it up yourself on line. It will have the tax qualification clearly stated in the upper right hand corner.

Cabinet size shouldn't matter, both are fine. Ask them why they switched sizes on you. If it's because that's what they have in stock, that's fine but I wouldn't pay extra for the bigger one. Heck, when I ask a customer to take what I have in stock I give them a discount, not the other way around.
