While working in a basement today I noticed the furnace burner continually igniting and shutting down.. This happened every 5 - 10 minutes for about 30 minutes while I was there.. The fan did not start at any time during these cycles.. When I checked the wall thermostat and moved the setting up, the burner ignited and the fan started as normal..

The furnace is an older Bryant model about 30 years or so.. should I call a technician or is this a somewhat normal condition..

thanks for any help..

Not really normal.

Most likely only a couple things that are causing it. Nothing real major, but definitely worth a call to a tech. But, with it being that old, definitely keep the option of new open.

I wonder about the integrity of that heat exchanger now.

Call a service tech. The fact that is went back to working normally after turning up the thermostat is most likely a co-incidence.

Personally, I think you should just replace that furnace. I probably wouldn't advise to put any money into repairing it.
