Good Day Everyone

All of a sudden, our bmtx lost comms with comm5, nothing is reading. We suspect it is the board so we are replacing them both in the bcu.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me the steps of doing this or if anyone has a document with the necessary steps.

Much Thanks

Do you have a backup of the database, graphics, and reports (if any) from summit? If so, then this will go very easy. If not, then things will be a little bit more complicated.

Do you have a copy of summit? If so, you can do the "copy site" option, and copy the database and most other info to the new bcu.

Copy site would be the incorrect action here. That simply just creates another copy of the database on the local PC. That does not relate to the bcu database or image.

You need to see if the BCU is talking via Ethernet or IP. Then you need to setup the new BCU that way using IPvalidate program that comes with Summit if its IP. Match the DIP switch settings. Then when you have the new BCU connected to Tracer Summit it will then download the new code and database to the BCU.

The Programming manual that comes with Tracer Summit goes over all of this, its just very lengthy. This is not an easy process for someone that is new. If you have to change the communication from the default ethernet to IP it will require a 9-pin serial connect to the mini-monitor port.

I hope that you did all of your homework before assuming that the BCU is toast because your Lontalk comms are down. I have never seen a BCU Lon Link fail other than in a flood or strong electrical event... First I would clear RAM and RESET and try a Device Discovery after that. Next, I would get out the ohmmeter and measure the resistance of the link, assuming that it has EOL's on both ends... the resistance should be about half the value of the EOL on the link... depends if they used 82 ohm or 120 ohm resistors... which depends if they used #22 or #18 wire. Try hooking up with Rover if you have it... Otherwise, before I ditch the BCU, I would disconnect the link and connect just one controller and see what you see. That should tell you if you have a link problem... The COMM5 link is very delicate and a failed board on the link could pull the whole thing down...Also check the LED's for the COMM5 link and compare to the information in the manual. Good Luck...

BMTX's are going away. At this point they are around 6k for a replacement...if you can get one. Strange, as I've only seen one fail and that was due to lightening. As Carrier1 said, get in with Rover to see whats going on. Comm 5 should be #22 with 82 ohm EOL resistors

Curious to know if there's any update on this. I can send you the summit programming manual (the big 700 page one) if you'd like.

Thanks but I have one of those more reading than needed. I just ended up setting it up like a new device and restored the backups working brilliantly.

There's always more than 1 way to do something, it's good to hear other people's opinions on how to do stuff.
