We're experiencing an intermittent error: "Device Comm Failure: BCU 1" on a tracer summit software system. Any advice in troubleshooting this error is appreciated.

Good luck, I have spent day's trying to find intermitant comm loss issues, I take it it's LonTalk.

Yes, apparently it is in the event log as "device comm failure: BCU 1" I am not onsite, nor can I connect to the site (very remote) The communication between the BCU and PC seems fine. A suggestion of a bad battery backup sounds best so far, thoughts?

I have very limited knowledge on the HVAC part - I'm the PC/network guy, so I definitely appreciate any insight you may have but will have to just relay most questions.

Could the event log be caused by devices (about 10 rooftop units) down line? Or is it specific to the BCU? I've been told "everything shows question marks and we reboot the BCU and PC and all is well."

Thanks, in advance, for your expertise.

existing site. no adverse weather or power issues during the times when the COMM failure happens. Again, rebooting the BCU corrects the issue.

correct me if I am wrong, but if he were having link issues wouldn't he see comm failures for devices on the link, vs just BCU-1? example, AHU1 Comm loss, AHU2 Comm loss, THen you would see comm restore later on these devices.

I don't feel you have a link issue, yet I am not there to see exactly what the deal is.

I would reccomend contacting controls rep for service you may have a BCU failing.

Check to see if the ethernet card in device manager under the power managment is checked
to turn the device off. If its checked then uncheck it.

nytrane has a good point... You need to figure out if rebooting the PC is fixing the problem, or if rebooting the BCU is fixing it. If the PC fixes it then you need to make sure the PC is not shutting off your network port. As for the BCU I have seen this with the BMTW when the standard or extended memory sticks are going bad, if this is the case eventually rebooting will not help.
