I made my initial post about the cut and paste terminology by reporters for testing CO detectors. It irks me that it perpetuates a misconception. I don't want to prolong our disagreement so I'm taking myself out of the discussion.
The media is doing a free public service and the public benefits from it. Many lives are surely saved from what they do and many more would be saved if they listened to their advice.

NO.

https://www.safetyandhealthmagazine...-percent-of-home-fire-deaths-involve-missing-malfunctioning-smoke-alarms-report

"In cases that involved malfunctioning alarms, 43 percent had missing or disconnected batteries. Dead batteries caused 25 percent of alarm failures."
From the article

Smoke alarms were absent in 40 percent of home fires that resulted in deaths, and alarms failed to operate in 17 percent of these incidents.

Missing 40% of the time. How is that the manufactures problem.

Failed to operate 17% of the time is disturbing but I'd like to have the reasons broken down! 1 house fire here the alarms still had the plastic covers on, that not the alarms fault. How many had dead batteries, were painted, installed in poor or improper locations?

Again nothing is perfect, machines break and malfunctions.

Yeah this is just more evidence as to why what the media does is a good thing. They remind you to have one and to change the battery and that it is human nature to turn something off that is bothering you. Like a low level CO detector that is either working properly or malfunctioning.

I wold bet that many of those that failed to operate were beyond their exp date.

Again I wont dispute that.

20 years ago i installed a central system in my house during construction. CO and Smoke Combined. The inspector said I couldn't use combined units, they wanted a different audible signal for CO or Smoke. Fine He left. I really didnt care at 03:00 what alarm rings as long as it wakes me up. The code has since been changed.

FWIW I just replaced the heads again for the 3rd time in 20 years

NO I'm pointing out the Double Standards and the False sense of security people have.

The last thing I want is more government worthless laws!
It isn't a false sense of security imo. Their lives are protected as designed. If one wants to have more protection they can have it. Lower level CO detectors are on the shelves of box stores. Even the least curious can find out about low level CO detection.

The logical problem is that you just have a hard time with that statement. It has blinded you from the simple logic of it.

If the standards aren't good enough I would be curious as to how you would design them. I mean you are the one complaining about them.

I would follow the OSHA standards.......50PPM over a 8hour period, but would amend it to @50PPM for 8 out of 24 hours.

Turns out it was a self contained merchandiser.

Coulda been?

This was one of them thar grillin fuel units. Never did get what caused this. Leak and a non spark proof motor or something most likely.

Not really
A few Oz LP for ignition
Maybe a PT of oil for fuel

Looks about right
Except when your standing next to it waiting in line to check out

Someone sent me those pics a day or two after that particular incident.

I figured they were all True units.
