Some are vacuum rated like the Appion. Others you can pull the shader out to replace it but they leak in a vacuum.

That sums it up pretty good.

The price difference is not that much. Get the good ones.

My Appion leaks but I've had it for a long time. I've heard that lubricating it with the blue Nylog would have prevented that.

More delayed it. The replacement seals are cheap. I just replaced them on my vcrt's as well as the hoses.

The 2nd is there to protect the 1st. DTOM

If only they were that easy to replace.

Have any tricks?

I just buy new ones every 2 years. Or when they leak.

My leaks have always been the O-rings. I have heard of others where it's the valve body that leaks but it's hearsay. When you buy just the vcrt it comes with extra O-rings

I have a cheap one I carry in the bag for regular day to day stuff.
I only pull out the Appion vac rated ones for evacuations. Keeps them new and leak free for longer.

We gotta love the way POE oil destroys rubber o-rings. And yet nothing can be done about it. Back in the mineral oil days I would rarely replace seals in hoses now it happens several times a year.

LOL! Yeah, I contacted Ritchie (Yellow Jacket) about this issue, and they claim their seals/gaskets have no issue with POE oil. I told them they're full of crap.

That is the way I do it as well.

Gaskets on guages and core removal tools are suppose to be tightened by hand only. Here are some pics of changing the gaskets in my leaky Appion. The one on the right is the new one.

The biggest problem you'll run into with any core puller is overtightening, if you overtighten the Schrader will get stuck on the compressed o-ring. effective use is to tighten it on like you're playing tea party with a daughter. Appion is the way to go but I carry a yellowjacket for systems that people have been adding dye and leak seal to.

I've had that problem of getting the Schrader stuck... Didn't know it was because of over tightening.

If a Schrader is installed with out the o-ring, how bad would the leak be? I had a tech come out to check for leaks, could not find any. When he left i went out to look at the unit an heard the leak coming from the Schrader valve high side. i call the tech back and he replaced it. the one he removed did not have an o-ring and was hissing really loud. Unit was fine no hissing before the tech came out that morning. i am wondering if he put in the Schrader valve without an oring to have a something to point at nest time out. If a Schrader is installed with out the o-ring, how bad would the leak be?

There is not an o-ring under the schrader... the schrader has the seal built in.

When schraders get old... like many water valves... they are fine until disturbed... then they do not seat.
Please do not blame the tech... it was probably an old schrader.

The O-rings we are talking about... are not in the schrader valve, nor under it... rather in our test and maintenance equipment.

Sometimes hooking up the gauges makes an old shrader valve come loose. Maybe it took a minute for it to start leaking after he left. O rings are in the tools, not in equipment.

Maybe you're just getting stronger so hand tightening is even tighter so you're ruining your orings faster.
