I know there's a lot of bashing of Goodman on HVACTALK. I agree they really should think twice about selling their stuff to the general public. There are many Goodman products I won't touch with a few notable exceptions:
.
Their 80% furnaces have all the right parts inside, but oh man are they loud. These furnaces are designed so that the fresh air openings on the front cover are right in front of the burners. Consequently Goodman 80% furnaces are a lot louder that most other furnaces.
Their AC units and heat pumps all use a copeland compressor, but that's really the only nice thing about them. The rest of the unit is built VERY cheap..... thin metal enclosure, with cheap paint job. In fact they're so flimsy that you can hear the coils flexing a lot as you transport the unit with you hand truck.
An exception that I wanted everyone to know is their 96% furnaces. They're very stout and feel solid. They're very quiet and have a nice setup inside. My local supplier just reduced pricing on Goodman so I agreed to sell their stuff. My favorite is the GMEC96 series which uses an x-drive ecm blower and a 2 stage burner. The board is easy to set up airflow and the GV is set up to to easily adjust GP. All of their 96% furnaces are insulated so when you close the covers up the unit is very quiet. My most recent installs had the furnace really close to the return air grill in the house. I was still able substantially reduce the noise level in the house with the new Goodman furnace.
As I said before I know Goodman doesn't do some things well. But I just thought I'd be fair and point out that I think some of their stuff is worth looking at. Especially since the pricing is very reasonable.
