That pretty much sums it up. I've got a 5 year old XR17 that has started buzzing when it's running on the first stage, but the buzzing goes away if it kicks into the second stage. I went outside to listen to it and the buzzing definitely sounds like it's coming from the compressor itself, as opposed to a loose metal panel on the outside unit. Should I be concerned that this is a sign of an actual problem, or is it more likely that it's being caused by something more mechanical, like the unit being out of level or the lines buzzing against something?

Related to this, I'm curious about how the XR17 works. Does the compressor run at a lower speed on the first stage than on the second? I've read that some compressors run at the same speed, but engage a second piston on the second stage.
