Why Does A Heat Pump Condenser Have A W Terminal?

Can someone clarify why a heat pump condenser has a W terminal? Is it to tell the furnace when to turn on auxiliary heat? I thought that was the thermostat's job. Or is it to know when the thermostat turned on auxiliary heat? If so, then why would it need to know that?

Basically looking for the logic that happens when a thermostat, furnace, and heat pump condenser are all connected with a wire between all of their W terminals.

In case it matters, I'm particularly interested in this in regards to Bosch heat pumps.

Thanks,
Harry

They tell me when in defrost mode while in heat setting, the board closes a set of contacts and sends a low voltage signal to energies a heating element to help temper the cold discharge air temperatures, ( providing there is a electric heater element in the Air Handler as an example ) as while in defrost mode your basically in A/C mode and the supply air temperatures can get quite low, especially the longer the system is in defrost mode….

You ready to pull the trigger soon…..on a new system?

There's no DIY involved. But if I'm gonna spend $10k plus on something I wanna know everything about it. Exactly how and why it works the way it works. Unfortunately this industry is very secretive so it's very hard to get the information I want to know without asking a thousand questions on a forum like this.

Thanks,
Harry

I always liked a good DIYer. Those good ones could rack up a couple grand worth of repairs in just a few hours. I can’t tell you how many no heat calls I have done because someone thought changing a 4 wire stat would be easy.

We aren’t trying to protect those with the skills to do the job properly. We are trying to protect them that can’t. The one asking may be fine, the one doing a search and stumbles onto this site may not be.

That is what limits what we can tell.
