So my wife wants to add one of those whole home scent diffusers. Obviously has to tap into the vent returning back into the home. Probably a dumb question, but which vent is going back to the house? I have vents coming off my unit, 2 at one end and 1 at the other. The “Horizontal Slab Coil” airflow arrow points to the 2 vent side. The “N-Coil” airflow arrow points to the 1 vent side. Any advice?

My advice would be to not add it.

You did not specify a brand so that may have a bearing on the issue but, over my 40+ years I have seen more issue where something to make the house smell better lead to a build up that caused a problem with the HVAC equipment. There used to be a poster on this site, we don't see a lot anymore but he always said if it smells clean it. He was on a ant fragrance campaign but still it is good advice. The point is rather than try and cover an odor remove it.

I don't know what member that was but I like him already. I've been in a lot of houses I almost can't work in because I just can't breathe due to the fragrances.

I see where you’re coming from. It’s a brand new Lennox unit in a brand new house. It’s not that the house smells bad, just want it to smell inviting without burning the house down with candles. I’m not sure “honey, I’m not installing this” is an option.

Are you saying you built a new house and didn't make a dog house in the back yard big enough to comfortably fit in with a TV, carpet, etc?

Candles and "Essential" oils put particles in the air. They can stain ceilings and carpets. They can probably gradually coat a blower wheel and A-coil. Fabreeze doesn't remove odors, it numbs our olfactory sense.

Don't cover or disguise odors. Make the air clean with the big 3 of IAQ - humidity control, filtration, and ventilation.

This brings up a great point. With a new home built to todays infiltration standards you need fresh air in the house as there is not enough leakage as in the past. When you talked about equipment you never mentioned an ERV/ HRV, or fresh air damper. Was anything installed.

One more thing as far as making a home smell inviting. Nothing better than fresh baked cookies, but that's just me.

Put one of those plug in "air wick" air fresheners in a room with a return air grill. Air circulation will pollute the whole house with the aroma.

Step two enjoy the refrigerant bill every 6 months when the evaporator coil leaks. I've never worked in a house with powerful fragrances that did not leak after a few years.
The new aluminum evaporators may have eliminated this problem but I am going to wait a few more years before I believe it.

@Solleml,
I would recommend against it as well.

Interesting story. I have a Essential Oil diffuser on my desk. 1 day last week I was adding 6 drops of I don't remember what essential oil to the water that was already in the device. I must not have been paying attention but I got 1 drop on my keyboard. A few minutes later I noticed it and went to wipe it off. Well guess what, That 1 drop had eaten the plastic similar to what acetone might have done. I now have an 1/8" divot in my keyboard.

Based on that event alone I would not ever consider connecting anything that uses essential oils to my furnace and/or A/C system.
Buy Ms. Solleml a nice table top diffuser and be done with it. JMO !
