What type A/C for window with window bars?

Hi,

I'm trying to find the best type of air conditioner for my circumstances.

I live in an apartment that has bars on the outside of the windows.

From the inside I have about 5" of depth between the wall and the window, a window and frame assembly approximately 5" wide, and a space of only 1" between the outside of the window frame and the bars... (the window is a 35" wide double-hung window.)

I was thinking that my best option would be to buy a through-the-wall type air conditioner and mount the sleeve for it in the window opening (and have the remaining depth of the air conditioner supported by a table inside of the room).

If this option is not possible for some reason I guess my only other option would be a portable a/c... but I would rather not go this route if at all possible.

I definitely cannot create another opening to install a through-the-wall type a/c nor can I remove or alter the bars.

Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated... thanks in advance.

that would not work, the condenser needs a lot more outside than inside. you'd just pump hot condenser air into the apartment.

portable unit standing on the floor with condenser air ducted to the window is the only way you're going to do it.

+1 on protable unit. If you can afford it, get one with 2 pipes so it uses outside air to cool the condenser. The cheaper ones have a single pipe, which means they blow already cooled indoor air outside.

Otherwise, if you can afford it, you could install a ductless mini split, but then you'd have to put a cage over the condenser so it doesn't get stolen.

Is this an apartment? IN you own the home, A 3rd option is to moutn a unit through the wall. But it takes some carpentry work to cut a hole in the wall.

Thanks everyone!

Yes, I do live in an apartment, and I do not think a ductless system would be appropriate not only because of the theft aspect but also because there is nowhere I could put it outside.

I probably will have to go with the portabe A/C, but, is there any chance that my original idea might work?
(a through the wall A/C with the sleeve for it mounted in the window)

If I do look to buy a portable unit is there a way to distinguish which models do have 2 pipes rather than just one (i.e. is there a special name for these portable units) because I will be shopping for it on the internet.

Thanks again
