It really should be turned. Im sure if you check with the manufacture, they would say the same. The problem I see is, it looks like there is pre-fabbed roof trusses there. More than likely on 24" oc, so not sure if the furnace is going to be able to be turned. Thats probably why the furnace is sitting the way it is.

Is that metal tape on the b-vent?

Why not stand it up?Looks like theres room above. If that furnace is left like that the cells will rust out alot faster.

Totally and completely unacceptalble. You will not find that in the install instructions. If I had the serial # I would void the warranty.

The problem is if you change the evaporator coil and leave the furnace that way then you would be liable if the owner got carbon monoxide poising.

If you are in need of the work you should find the installation instructions for the furnace and show the owner where it is installed wrong. He should want it to be correctly installed so that he doesn't wake up dead.

I would have locked out and tagged the heat section and advised the homeowner that is not a acceptable installation and noted on the invoice. Even though you did not install you could still be held liable. Or at the very least spend a fortune on legal fees defending yourself if someone died or the place burned down. Just let a lawyer get a hold of it.

We will be going back.... More for the A/C now, but that furnace will be fixed.

I hope the heat exchange looks good... didn't go that far in..

i hate that the criterion i found like that was on a day i didnt have a camera with me. this was last fall on a clean and check. customer shows me to his closet andpoints at the floor and says its down there and leaves. i pull up the portal to you know where, the crawlspace of course!! so glad he had plastic down there to crawl on. the furnace and water heater were both down in a cement pit in the crawlspace. to access the furnace, you had to crawl over top of the furnace to get in the pit, criterion on its back. cant even get the door off of it for model and serial. supply duct comes out of plenum, does 180 to top of door and goes up to register boot. water heater is gas and has a T on it. left end of T is left open and other end slopes down about 6 inches and then goes back up to flue. i go up and say sorry cant work on unit it is unsafe and installed on its back which is dangerous to you. they look in book and say few choice words and i'm correct. told them about h20 heater too...

didn't know they manufactured every positional furnace, it's going to cut down on having to think about all installation applications and safety!! Bet the same installer has one on a roof somewhere?

The UL listing of that machine and probably some of the components is voided. If there is a fire the guy shouldn't expect any money from that insurance company he's been paying through the years.

Then what's his next move? Hires his own lawyer and they turn of the professional that let it go. Then your company drops you and gets it's own lawyers. Do you think anyone would side with you in a courtroom if you tread light on something like this? I say you need to be explicit in your paperwork and make sure it's signed.

But that's just me and my lawyer-phobia.. It seems that everyone else gets away with stuff like that.

** Oops, missed the second page. But still good food for thought.

I have a customer that has the exact same situation off George Bush Freeway - been running that way for years - 5 that I have been going out. I keep thinking it will die one of these years but it just keeps plugging along.
