I recently graduated from trade school and went down to my local UA (412). Neither of the employers that work with the local wanted to employ me at the moment, JCI and Honeywell, but the rep told me that there was a big construction project coming up where they would need a lot of technicians. However, I'm not necessarily sure when the job is or when the next job will be after this one finishes. At the same time, one of my friends started working for Pride Industries, who is organized under the IUOE (local 351). The starting pay is better and its a guaranteed full-time job if I get it, as opposed to construction projects, so it seems like the better deal? The only thing is that prior to this I've never heard of the IUOE, only the UA. I wanted to get information and opinions from those who have experience in the field. What is the difference between the two unions? What are the pros and cons? Any response is appreciated as I haven't been able to find much.
