I have a Carrier 48 JZ Single Packaged Gas Heating/Electric Heat Pump. The system was running 24/7 and never reaching the setpoint. Cool air during stage 1 and nice warm air during stage 2. Call tech and he said you have leak in heat pump. Compressor pressure was 40. Tech added freon up to 160. A week later it was back to 40. We decided to turn on emergency heat only as the temperature was dropping to 14 degrees F at night. My house hydro consumption has dropped 40%. It is 77 degrees F inside the house (warm). Something is seriously wrong with this scenario.

you have a leak. have it found and fixed, then you will be back to running more efficiently than with straight resistance heat

Daily consumption for Hydro lowest in 11 years. Makes me wonder if I have had a leak since day 1 (I have had machine for 11 years)? Tech said I am looking at about 1000 bucks to fix leak.

Bright side is once Tech. finds the leak ( if they have not yet ) charging your system should be straight forward as the total charge on package units are listed on the electrical data plate ( hopefully its legible ) chances of them over/under charging should be slim to none.

Tech never found leak. He thinks it is inside the machine. Not sure what he meant by this

Let me get this straight...

You have a gas pack, as in a system entirely outside in a box attached to your home with ductwork only inside your house...

And it is a DUAL FUEL heat pump as well?

I did not know that was an option in a package format 11 years ago.

Do you have model numbers and pictures of the system?

Single Packaged Gas Heating/Electric Heat Pump Units with Puron (R-410A) Refrigerant

Model# 48JZ0360900311

The machine is way to close to the house. The first angle duct basically causes the limit switches to trip. This is why the cover is off. I need to build a cover and poke some holes for better airflow.

Or move it away from the house and put in a proper elbow in. The duct looks ok other than right at the back of the unit and could be a little small (hard to tell from the pic but maybe 16x8? Which wouldn't be enough for 3 tons). I definitely wouldn't have installed it like that with the duct exposed on the side of the house. Split system would've been a better choice.

What kind of elbow would you put in? Would you redesign this setup? How would you set up a spilt system?
I'd make a box that flipped the supply and return so they didn't have to cross on the side of the house with that big loop. I'd also build flashing to protect it and paint the flashing to blend in with the siding. I can't believe that duct wrap has held up as well as it looks out in the weather like that.

Furnace/coil or air handler somewhere inside (closet or something) or in the attic and outdoor unit outside.
