I have a XL I 16 Trane unit only for AC. The unit was installed in 2005 and it is 2 1/2 tons. My house is two stories but only 1100 square feet. Since the beginning when the temp gets to be higher than 96 here in New York, the temp inside would never be lower than 76. Three weeks ago, I started the unit and heard a weird noise. A mechanic come and told me that the compressor needed to be replaced. The unit was under warranty and Trane sent a new unit. However, since the new unit was installed, even with only 85 degrees outside, the inside remains only in the mid 70's. The mechanic have been here at least seven times and he said that he had charged the unit and done everything possible. He clams that he called Trane and they told him that the unit is correct. By the way, a month ago I installed new windows and siding. This is driving me crazy. The bill for the mechanic is already $, and I am afraid of calling another. I guess that my question is What should be my next step.

P.S. today is 90 degrees here and already inside is 76 .

Please help.

Thanks,

Juan

I'd get someone else to look at the system.

Also, there has never been such a thing as a 2.5 ton XL16i outdoor unit.

Thanks Mark. You are correct. I just looked at the unit and is only 2.0 tons. I will call a Trane distributor in my area and get a second opinion. By the way, is 2.o tons enough for my 1100 square feet?

Have a Happy four of July.

Hey Guys,

I had a different company come today and take a look a of the AC. According to this company, the ac unit and thermostat has never wired up for dual states and they did it. However, the feel that my unit (2 tons) is too small for my house 1050 square feet with new windows and siding). Today is 87 out side and I set my thermostat to 70 and it is 76 inside. This is a new unit only 8 years old with a new compressor from Trane. I am now using Trane specialists and not getting any right answers. To instal a new system (3) tons they are quoting dollars. I notice that when he measured the temps form the vents and the returns the difference was only about 5 degrees. According to him the reason is because of the size of my unit. The house has two returns and 7 vents. It is a small house two bedrooms, one bath, combo living room, dining and kitchen. I bought this unit through HomeDepot and the company who originally installed it is not longer open. Any suggestions, what should I do next. I am so frustrated that I feel like pricing a window unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
