I have a few Leaking Trane microchannel condenser coils (R410a) I’m considering giving Trane’s microchannel repair kit a try. Has anyone used it and how well has it held up. Been seeing a lot of advice against epoxies for microchannel repair. Give me your views guys😐

To me, epoxy is always a temporary repair. I suggest either using an aluminum alloy to solder the leak or replacing the coil. Where is the leak on the coil?

lucas milhaupt makes some aluminum rods. I have personally never used them. If it comes down to it you could cut that pass out of the coil and leave a "dead pass" soldering the ends closed. If you or someone in your fab shop if you have one could attemp to tig weld it. We had a condensor header crack and welded till the new coil was installed.

carrier used to sell a kit also....had cleaner/flux, rod, and a piece of fin to put back in to the hole. I never used it, but some of the other guys had, and said it worked fine.

you had to use a propane torch with it, so you had less of a chance of melting something.

I'd try it over replacing a coil.

I have used the Lucas Milhaupt alloy on an Aqua Snap copper to aluminum joint and it held. You have to get it super clean and be very careful with the heat. I wouldn't use oxy acetylene.

York sells a nice microchannel repair kit. Comes with aluminum flux core solder, a stainless steel brush, and instructions. Only costs about 25 or 30. Works great, I fixed a couple coils with it.

I have made an aluminum solder as well as epoxy adhesive to make repairs. The key to making a long term/permanent repair is to follow the manufacturers instructions. Long term meaning it will last as long as the machine does. Above all else you need to enusre it is clean, degreased and that you use the correct type of wire brush or emery paper. Don't rush the repair unless you really want to replace whatever you are trying to save.
