Hello all. Had a no cool call on a trane. 20i. 900 stat. Flashing fault led on condenser board. Every couple mins is hear a click and all lights go out for a few sec then come back. Found a lizard behind the board shorting the data term to 24 volt term. So I replaced the board and everything ran ok. A week later error codes start showing up randomly. And clear themselves. So the customer calls today with these codes. 126 89 90 91
And he said the unit won't run. I get there and there's only 126 and condensers not running. Also a weird issue is the cool disappeared from the system menu I pulled off the stat and made sure the three wires were tight. One was actually a little loose. So I put the stat on and there was the cool again. Now the system runs but 126 still flashing on stat. Is it possible the lizard caused a spike to the stat ? Any input would be appreciated.

Is this the XL950 thermostat? If so, update the firmware to 3.0. Previous versions have caused random 126 events.

Error 126 is loss of communication. I would suggest the following.

1. Confirm all low volt connections tight and secure.

2. Clear error 126 from history.

3. Check for 12v DC at data terminals on all pieces of equipment.

This may not completely fix your problem but it's a good place to start.

No clean effects filter. Condenser is around 30-35 ft from handler. Ahu in attic. It is a tcon900. I made sure to cut and reconnect wires at condenser. This problem didn't start until the lizard shorted the board. Also how do I update the firmware on that stat? Will the unit still run while showing 126? ALso something strange, I forget what code I had up but the cool icon went missing from the system menu until I removed and replaced the stat. Then it showed back up

Had a similar issue recently and it ended up being the blower motor. Check the display at your air handler for faults because those are usually true. If your condenser and air handler boards comm lights (Amber) are showing 3 flashes than its telling you that all 3 pieces AH/CU/STAT are being recognized. My recommendation if the wire to the condenser needs to be change is to run a pair of stranded 16g wires. Tstat wire is too risky IMO

I had a similar situation a couple weeks ago.

I had a bad stat wire to the outdoor unit causing code 126. Fixed, watched it run and left. That night the customer called the tech on call saying it was giving a code 89.

He went out there the next morning, found the breaker tripped, the first stage compressor sounded like it was trying to pump nuts and bolts. The thermostat was showing error code 126 again, too.

After enough cycling of the breaker style disconnect to the outdoor unit, he discovered it didn't work anymore. He pops off the cover to find a lizard shorted the line voltage and blew the breaker.

That caused a voltage drop so the compressor would not start, and the error code 89 was from loss of 24v to the outdoor unit.

Always check your line voltage and look for a voltage drop. It could be a crispy lizard causing all of your issues.

Not saying this is your problem but it's a reminder that it's a little more difficult to isolate issues with this equipment as it's all tied together.

I've never seen any installation with stranded thermostat wire. The instructions only mention 18 to 22. I meant to say 22AWG was the smallest recommended wire size in my last post.

Cat 5 is something like 30AWG, isn't it?

I will just run new wire and warranty the stat. Then see what happens. I talked to a local that installs a crap load if these 20i (use to, no more) and he said they are very problematic. I won't plan on selling any but I may dabble in the rheem communicating systems.
