My son is looking at a Trane dual-fuel system, but the ComfortLink II doesn't have Zwave and seems to require a monthly subscription for remote access. Well that's just a non-starter. Carrier doesn't require this.

He would like to have remote access with his iPhone, so I am wondering whether there is any other thermostat which is compatible with the newest Trane heat pump and furnace?

The Honeywell Prestige HD seems nice and has Zwave, but will it work with Trane? Seems like the Nest thermostat is for non-communicating systems only? Are there any other options for Trane?

The new Trane XL950 is able to do remote access via iPhone app or desktop. As stated above, there is no charge for remote thermostat access only. If you want to run lights, locks, blinds, etc...there is a fee for that.

Is your sons system communicating? If not, there are several other stats that offer free remote access. Please post model and serial of systems so I can provide more information.

Thank you kpiontek and Brett. He is looking at buying the newest Trane furnace and heat pump, so it will be communicating. Are there any other brand t-stats that will work on Trane's communicating system?

And why does jpsmith1cm have to be such a nuisance? Always getting in peoples' faces and deleting helpful answers. Fortunately I'd copied it before this happened. Ease up a little man.

The XL950 is the only Thermostat that will work with a Trane communicating system. A communicating system would be an XL20i and an XC80, XC95M or a TAM8 air handler, if you don't have these pieces of equipment its not communicating and any thermostat can be used like the Honeywell WiFi or Prestige HD.

To make some corrections now
The XL950 does work with z-wave, you just need the kit that trane sells and it comes with a lock and a light switch I think. The Prestige HD DOES NOT work with zwave, it is Redlink technology and they do not cross communicate that I know of.
The trane XL950 DOES NOT have a remote access fee, it is free to use on iPhone or droid etc. there is only a $8.99 fee if you have it connected to the Schlage Link ZWave system with lights and cameras and door locks.

The Trane XL900 is also communicating and still available. Although the XL950 certainly has more advanced features, including remote access.

OK so the XL950 it is.

My son has a quote for:
Furnace TUHMB060ACV3VA
Heat Pump 4TWZ0036B
Evaporator 4TXFH036CZ3
Thermostat XL950

... but I tried to look this up on AHRI to make sure he'll get the tax credit, and I don't know if I'm doing it wrong but I can't find this furnace in any of the approved systems.

Ok I see. You have to remove arbitrary letters from the furnace.

He's in Washington State. Puget Sound Energy gives a $250 rebate for the right furnace and $800 for the right heat pump. I'm a little concerned because AHRI doesn't give which furnaces are Energy Star. And I tried looking up the XL20i 4TWZ0036B in EnergyStar and it couldn't find it.

According to Trane's rinky-dink bar graph the XV95 TUH2B060A9V3VA furnace is much lower cost and slightly higher efficiency than the XC95m TUHMB060ACV3VA. On the AHRI site when I pull up the 4TWZ0036B1 and UH2B060A9V3 it gives four different certifications. One has a different coil, but the rest are the same for some reason, and sure enough the SEERs are higher, than for the modulating furnace, oddly.

So the best efficiency is with the non-communicating furnace and communicating heat pump, but it's unclear whether the XL950 thermostat can control both.

The XL950 can control both with an optional relay panel although in that case I would prefer to use the Honeywell Prestige or maybe the new Honeywell WiFi VisionPro if he doesn't require the additional functionality of the XL950 or Honeywell Prestige. The Prestige requires an additional bridge to connect to the homes router but the WiFi VisionPro does not.

- Anyone know whether the XL20i is EnergyStar?
- Whether furnaces can be EnergyStar?
- Why the XV95 is more efficient than the XC95m?
- Why there are three different certs for the XV95?
