Hi all,
I realise this must be an annoying question but I would welcome a second opinion.
I'm getting a new AC and furnace, and was expecting a reccommendation for a 4 or 5 ton AC unit, based on online calculators, but the installer reccommended a 3 ton unit. This seems way off though I'm prepared to admit he knows more than me!
House in in southern ontario. 2700sq ft + 1300 sq ft finished basement. 2 storey. Downstairs ceilings are 10-12ft, with a 2 storey hallway. We get a lot of sun here, summer days 80-90 not uncommon for 2-3 months.
The house has no shade, a black roof and although I haven't measured out any windows, there's a good number and they're a good size. I'll be honest and say my insulation could be better.
The sun here is well known for aging decks and roofs quicker than average.
I just can't find any calculators that give me a 3 ton recommendation for this size house, and nothing about the house tells me it'll need less cooling than the average house.
The installer's reason for the recommendation was, he put the number in his computer program, and that's what came up - so didn't fill me with confidence.
Am i just being a know-it all homeowner who spends too much time watching youtube videos and thinks he's an expert, or am I right to be cautious about installing this small of a unit. Could 4 ton really be overkill for this scenario?
Thanks!
Jon
