We are recent purchasers of a home whose upstairs heat pump system was replaced before we bought the home. When using to air conditioning all sounds well. However when we began using the heat there is a significant and disturbing ticking inside the wall where the lines run up to the attic air handler. This wall happens to be right by the head of our bed but it is so noticeable it would annoy anyone anywhere. The company that installed the unit for the previous owners came out and said it is the lines vibrating against each other or the pressure in the lines (although they said pressure in lines was appropriate) and there are only two solutions - of course at our own expense. Either knock out the bedroom wall and try to locate the area of vibration and try to resolve OR run new lines on exterior of house.

Any thoughts on this situation would be so appreciated.

Additionally, Is it possible that the new system is too powerful for the original lines from the old system? Thank you.

Linesets are sized for tonnage and length of run. Your lineset may just need to be secured better where it penetrates into the attic, and by OD wall penetration or secured better where it's exposed, such as attic run. Not unusual to get a hissing sound from the larger line during heat as the refrigerant pressures are higher. I would try that first.

You may want to get the serial numbers of the ID and OD unit to see if your system was ever registered to whom if it was the previous owners name. Manufacturers warranty typically decrease if never registered.
